Chapter 437 A Mother’s Hollow Title
Vanessa’s heart sank at her words.
Why did everyone make such a big deal about their mothers?
At her preschool, all the other kids were picked up by their moms every afternoon.
Even that annoying Clara was always trailing after her mother.
Other people were one thing, but now Sabrina was saying it too.

A sour, helpless feeling spread through Vanessa’s chest. When she thought of Scarlett, she couldn’t summon any warmth-only a stubborn residue of blame.
Her emotions in a jumble, Vanessa buried herself against Sabrina, wrapping her arms tightly around her waist as she cried, “Sabrina, you’re my mommy. I only want you.”
Sabrina held her, but there was no real tenderness in the gesture. She kept a light smile on her face. “Of course, sweetie.”
Vanessa cried harder, dampening Sabrina’s shirt with tears.
Sabrina’s patience thinned. She gently but firmly eased Vanessa back. Looking down at her, she asked, “Why didn’t you go home with your daddy earlier?”
Vanessa’s brow furrowed. “Sabrina… don’t you want me here with you?”
Sabrina quickly painted her smile back on. “No, no, it’s not that. I’m just worried about you staying out so late.”
“You don’t have to worry,” Vanessa insisted, wiping her cheeks. “I can take care of myself. And I can take care of you, too.”
Sabrina gave a soft, noncommittal hum. “Mmm.”
Another half hour passed before Maria finally arrived.
The moment Sabrina saw her mother, her
eyes welled up with self-pity. “Mom.”
Maria settled on the edge of the bed, her movement inadvertently nudging Vanessa toward the foot. Vanessa, who was uneasy around Maria, stayed quiet and still.
Maria took Sabrina’s hand, her voice thick with concern. “How on earth did you manage to

hurt your leg like this?”
Sabrina leaned into her, tears falling. “It was just an accident, Mom. I didn’t mean to.”

Maria gave her arm a light tap. “An accident? You’re a grown woman, still giving your mother these scares. You’ll be the death of me.”
Sabrina clung to her, voice turning plaintive. “Mom, don’t scold me, I’m hurt. I want your pot roast. And those buttermilk biscuits you make.”
Maria’s scolding melted away. She hugged Sabrina, patting her back. “Alright, alright. I’ll stay a while, then go home and make whatever you want. You just tell me.”
Vanessa sat forgotten at the foot of the bed.
Once Maria arrived, Sabrina’s attention had shifted completely.
The bond between Sabrina and her mother was so… natural.
Against her will, Vanessa thought of Scarlett.
Just last year, Scarlett had still doted on her-making her favorite mac and cheese, taking her to the theme park, playing board games with her, flying kites together in the park…
But now, Mommy was different.
Mommy didn’t seem to care anymore.
Why were other kids’ mothers so loving?
And hers was so… cold?

After leaving the hospital, Scarlett took the passenger seat in Vincent’s car.
Sitting there made her skin crawl.
This wasn’t just her seat-Sabrina had been here too, not long ago.
The thought turned her stomach.
And the man beside her… he’d been close with Sabrina in ways that now felt disturbingly tangible.

Scarlett sat stiffly, her expression icy. Vincent showed no sign of driving off, and she guessed he was waiting for Sabrina to call, saying Vanessa was crying, begging them to come back.
But after nearly ten minutes sitting in the silent car, Vincent’s phone stayed dark.
Finally, he seemed to give up waiting. He started the engine and pulled away from the curb.
Watching him, a thread of worry tugged at Scarlett. She turned to him, her voice uneasy. “Are you really not going back for Vanessa?”
The car slowed at a red light. Once stopped, Vincent looked over at her. The stern shadows on his face seemed to lift slightly when his eyes met hers.
A slow, deep smile touched his lips. “She chose to stay. Let her live with her choice for a night.”
Scarlett’s anxiety didn’t ease. Her tone grew more urgent. “But she still has a fever-”
She cut herself off.
Hearing her concern, Vincent’s smile widened. “See? You still care. About her. About us.”
Scarlett closed her eyes briefly, offering no reply to that.
Vanessa was her own flesh and blood-how could she not care?
Besides, Sabrina was injured, Vanessa was sick, and they’d left a little girl there with them. What parent could truly rest easy?
When the light turned green, Vincent didn’t press her further. He drove on in silence.
The car made its way to Ravenshade Villa. About thirty minutes later, it stopped at the front
gates.
Vincent moved to get out and open Scarlett’s door, but before he could round the hood, she had already stepped out on her own.
