The small courtesies and gentle gestures she had once craved from him no longer held any real meaning for her.
Vincent’s attempt at chivalry was left hanging, and a wry, humorless smile touched his lips.
Scarlett walked toward the entrance of Ravenshade Villa without waiting for him.
Vincent caught up in a few long strides, falling into step beside her.
When they reached the front hall, Lily-who was dusting the console table-heard footsteps and turned.
Backlit by the hallway light, she could just make out Scarlett’s silhouette.
Lily paused, surprised, but once she was sure it was really her, she said with genuine warmth, “Mrs. Stewart? You’re back.”
Scarlett nodded, offering Lily a small, tired smile.
Just then, Vincent asked, “Lily, where’s Grandpa?”
Still holding her feather duster, Lily replied, “He said he wasn’t quite settled here. The driver drove him back to Stewart Manor about an hour ago.”
Vincent gave a quiet nod. “I see.”
Lily’s attention returned to Scarlett, her expression brightening. “Have you eaten yet, Mrs. Stewart?”
Scarlett almost laughed. “Lily, it’s not even eleven. Lunch is still a while off.”
Vincent stood to the side, watching Scarlett smile at Lily. For some reason, the sight needled him-a faint, persistent sting in his chest.
er answer, Lily quickly stepped forward and took Scarlett’s arm. “Even better! What
ike? I’ll make you something right now.”
thought for a moment. “Please don’t go to any trouble, Lily. Anything quick is fine.”
y shook her head, insistent. “No, no trouble at all. It’s so good to have you home. Just name it-I’ll get it started.”

Unable to refuse such earnest kindness, Scarlett relented. “Alright, then. Thank you, Lily.”
“No thanks needed,” Lily said warmly. “You’re the lady of the house. It’s what I’m here for.”
The lady of the house.
Scarlett was no longer the lady of Ravenshade Villa.
The words left her feeling momentarily suspended, as if the ground had shifted slightly under her feet. Lily seemed to realize her own misstep and hurried off toward the kitchen without another word.
Once Lily was gone, Scarlett drifted over to the sofa and sat down absently.
Her eyes fell on the coffee table. Once, it had been cluttered with baby things-diapers, formula containers, bottles. Now it held a tasteful vase of fresh flowers, and a few glossy fashion magazines.
It wasn’t hard to imagine Sabrina sitting here, sipping coffee and flipping through those pages.
Vincent followed her gaze. Seeing her fixed stare, he walked over and asked, “Something wrong with the table?”
Scarlett pulled herself from her thoughts, the clarity slowly returning to her eyes. She looked up at him. “No. It’s fine.”
It wasn’t that she disliked it.
She had picked this table out herself, years ago.
But now it held traces of a life that wasn’t hers.
Vincent didn’t press. He simply said, “I’ll go up and get the bedroom ready for you.”
At that, Scarlett spoke quickly. “I’ll take one of the guest rooms.”
Vincent stopped. He looked down, his eyes holding hers. “What married couple sleeps in separate rooms?”
Scarlett’s voice stayed level. “Are we really a couple?”
“Aren’t we?” he shot back.
She didn’t want to argue. “I’m only sleeping in a guest room, Vincent.”

He studied her, seeming on the verge of saying more.
But before he could, Lily reappeared from the kitchen.

She had an apron tied around her waist. “Mrs. Stewart,” she said, “would you prefer something light like seafood, or something heartier like a stew?”
Scarlett managed another faint smile. “Anything is fine, Lily. Really.”
Lily thought for a second, then her face brightened. “I’ll make your favorite-sweet and sour ribs.”
A sudden, sharp wave of emotion rose in Scarlett’s chest. Her nose tingled, and for a moment she feared tears might spill, but she held them back.
“Thank you, Lily,” was all she said.
Lily just smiled warmly before disappearing back into the kitchen.
Having Scarlett home clearly made her happy.
Once Lily was gone again, Vincent turned his attention fully to Scarlett. “Go upstairs and rest, then.”
He didn’t specify which room.
But Scarlett was determined not to sleep in Vincent’s bedroom.
She gave a quiet “Mm” and started up the staircase.
Vincent’s gaze followed her. As she began climbing, he suddenly remembered something. In a few quick steps, he caught up, slid an arm behind her knees and around her back, and lifted her easily against his chest.
Before Scarlett could react, her feet were off the ground. Instinctively afraid of falling, she had no choice but to loop her arms around his neck.
Suddenly, they were close-too close.
When Vincent glanced down, the line of his jaw brushed lightly against her lips.
Scarlett immediately turned her face away.
A low, deep chuckle escaped him. “Are you really that scared of me?”
