Vincent gave a low chuckle. “If you’re not scared, then why won’t you look at me?”

Scarlett slowly raised her eyes to meet his. Holding his gaze, she said quietly, “Vincent, there’s no need for this. Put me down. I can walk by myself.”

Vincent didn’t release her. Instead, he leaned in, his head dipping as if to brush a kiss against her lips.

But at the last second, Scarlett turned her face away.

His kiss landed softly on her cheek.

Vincent stilled, his brow furrowing.

For a moment, he felt strangely unmoored.

There had been a time when he’d looked down on this woman, even disdained her. But now, as she pushed for a divorce and turned her attention elsewhere, it dawned on him-he didn’t. want to let her go.

Without another word, Vincent carried her the rest of the way, striding directly to the guest

room.

He didn’t force the issue; he honored her request and took her there.

The moment he set her down on the guest bed, Scarlett felt a flicker of surprise. Maybe he really was trying to change.

In the past, he wouldn’t have listened to anyone. If he wanted something, he simply took it.

Vincent pulled the comforter over her and stood beside the bed, just looking down.

After a pause, he said, “Get some rest. I’ll be downstairs.”

Scarlett was taken aback but didn’t reply.

He took two steps toward the door, then stopped. Turning back, he looked at her once more. “If you need anything, call for me. I’ll be right downstairs.”

Scarlett frowned but nodded. “Okay.”

Only then did Vincent head downstairs.

Lily was moving around the kitchen when Vincent appeared in the doorway a short while later.

He stood leaning against the frame as she worked at the stove.

Lily glanced at him but didn’t speak.

After finishing a cigarette, Vincent finally asked, “Does she really like sweet and sour ribs that much?”

Lily nodded. “Yes, she does.”

Vincent filed that away silently, then added, “Make a couple of lighter dishes too. For the next few days, keep the food mild. Her stomach might not handle heavy spices well right now.”

Lily paused, a little stunned, but then simply said, “Alright.”

Vincent didn’t leave. He lingered, watching her work.

Feeling his presence, Lily glanced back questioningly.

Meeting her look, Vincent finally spoke again, “What else does she like? Food, drinks, fruit, snacks, clothes, colors-anything you know.”

Lily, holding a spatula over the sizzling ribs, stopped stirring.

When the oil began to spatter, she snapped back to the present, turning the heat down before looking at Vincent. “Mr. Stewart… is everything alright?”

In all her years working here, Lily had never seen Vincent take such an interest in Scarlett’s preferences.

Vincent understood her surprise. He kept his tone neutral. “Just tell me what you know.”

Lily had little choice. “She likes ribs, shrimp, corn, potatoes, beef, bell peppers, okra, taro… jackfruit, apples, watermelon. She drinks orange juice and coffee. Favorite colors are probably black and navy blue. Beyond that, I’m not sure.”

Vincent committed it all to memory. “Got it.”

As he turned to leave, Lily suddenly called out, “Mr. Stewart!”

Vincent stopped and looked back. “Yes?”

Lily spoke carefully, earnestly, “Mr. Stewart, if you truly want Mrs. Stewart back… just

Vincent hadn’t expected Lily to see straight through him. He simply asked, “Then what should I do?”

“What woman could stand having another woman around her husband?” Lily said gently. “You need to figure out who it is you really want in your heart.”

Vincent knew she was referring to Sabrina. “I’ll think about it,” he said.

Seeing he was about to leave again, Lily added quickly, “And you share a child. Think about what it does to a little girl, being apart from her mother. People say, ‘Home is where the heart is. For a child, that’s even truer. No other woman, no matter how kind, can ever really take the place of her own mother.”

Vincent understood what she meant. But he said nothing more. He simply turned and walked out of the kitchen.
