Chapter 445 Forbidden Fruit

Harris frowned at him. “Come on, don’t be like that. He didn’t mean it.”
Daniel shook off Harris’ hand. “He meant every word.”
Then he added, “He’s the one who’s lost it, not me.”
With that, Daniel stormed out of the private room.

Harris made a move as if to follow, but Vincent-who still had an arm around Scarlett-spoke in a low, steady voice. “What about the cake?”
Harris stopped, though he kept glancing anxiously toward the door.
Vincent added, “Scarlett picked it out. If you’re not having any, you can leave too.”
Put so bluntly, Harris clenched his jaw and sat back down.
Scarlett was leaning against Vincent’s chest, close enough to smell the metallic scent of blood from his hand.
The cut was from broken glass. It bled freely but wasn’t deep.
Even if it were, it wasn’t her place to care.
She straightened up and went back to eating, her eyes down.
Seeing her continued indifference, Vincent felt a sharp, quiet ache in his chest.
With his hand injured, he could barely hold his fork, let alone serve her food.
But noticing she was only eating what was directly in front of her, he turned to Harris. “Harris, pass a few dishes Scarlett’s way.”
Hearing that, Harris looked even more surprised.
Still, he didn’t actually dislike Scarlett. And with Vincent hurt, the request didn’t feel out of line.
After a moment, Harris nodded. “Sure.”
He began selecting portions from various plates and adding them to Scarlett’s.

Looking at the small mound of food in front of her, Scarlett offered a faint smile. “Thank you, Harris.”
She held no ill will toward him.
Some dishes were spicy, so she avoided those.
After the meal, Harris moved on to cutting the cake.
Worried about Daniel, he hurried through the ritual.
He made a quick wish, then began slicing.
The first and largest piece went to Scarlett. “Here, for you.”
Scarlett accepted the plate. “Thanks.”
Vincent watched her smile from the corner of his eye. The sight twisted something inside him.
She could smile like that for Harris, but for him… there was nothing left.
Not even for show.
Once the cake was passed around, Harris glanced at Scarlett, then stood and swapped seats with the person on her right.
Scarlett was now between him and Vincent.
She didn’t understand the move at first.
As soon as he settled, Harris leaned in slightly and asked in a hushed tone, “Your friend Claire… how has she been? I haven’t seen her post any cooking videos lately.”
Hearing Claire’s name come up so suddenly left Scarlett momentarily speechless.
Vincent, who had been watching Harris closely, frowned deeply.
Catching Vincent’s look, Harris smiled quickly. “You know, Vincent-Claire Wright, Scarlett’s friend. She’s the one I mentioned. The girl I like.”
Harris said it so openly that Vincent felt a jolt of surprise.
Scarlett, in turn, looked at Vincent, confusion in her eyes.

Seeing the sudden tension, Harris asked, “What? What’s the matter?”
Vincent met Scarlett’s gaze briefly before saying to Harris, “She’s not right for you.”
That single sentence held his final word on the matter.
Hearing it, Scarlett felt as if a weight had dropped into her stomach.
Reason told her he was saying it for his friend’s sake.

Even so, she couldn’t shake the feeling that Vincent was, at his core, cold and unfeeling.
Harris looked puzzled. “What do you mean, not right? Sure, I’m in business and she’s a content creator, but she’s amazing. Especially when she calls people out-I think it’s cool. I like how direct she is. How real.”
Vincent’s expression stayed tight. He stood. “Harris, come outside with me. We need to talk.”
The napkin on his injured hand had stuck to the wound.
But he ignored it, his demeanor serious as he asked Harris to step out.
Harris looked baffled but rose and followed him into the hallway.
Once they were gone, Scarlett lowered her head. A sudden heat pricked behind her eyes.
In that moment, a bitter, unnamed sorrow filled her chest-for herself, and for Claire.
All these years around Vincent’s circle, she’d always thought Harris was one of the good ones. He didn’t play games with women, and he’d never treated her the way Daniel or even Vincent sometimes had.
