If Claire developed feelings for him, perhaps something genuine could grow between them.
But as things stood, Scarlett didn’t know if Claire would ever truly step out from under Elias’ shadow.
Soon, Vincent and Harris returned.
Harris looked deflated. The spark that had been in his eyes when he spoke of Claire was completely gone.
Scarlett’s heart sank instantly.
A few minutes later, Harris stood and addressed the remaining guests. “Let’s wrap it tonight, everyone. We’ll catch up again soon.”
Since Harris called it, no one protested.
Soon, the private room was nearly empty.
Finally, Vincent looked at Scarlett and said quietly, “We should head back too.”

Scarlett felt a tightness in her throat. She glanced once more at Harris before nodding. “Alright.”
Vincent took her hand and helped her up.
Turning to Harris, he added in a low voice, “You should get some rest, Harris.”
Harris just nodded silently.
Vincent knew Harris would need time to digest what he’d been told about Claire.
So he led Scarlett by the hand out of the room.
Outside in the hallway, noticing Scarlett’s distracted expression, Vincent turned to her. “Are you upset with me?”
Scarlett met his gaze, her own filled with confusion. “Upset about what? That you’re cold? But you’ve always been this way.”

Her words stung, but Vincent could only explain helplessly, “I told Harris because he deserved to know. If, after thinking it through, he still wants to be good to Claire, I won’t stand in his way. But some things shouldn’t be kept in the dark.”
Scarlett looked away without responding.
She didn’t know how to answer him, nor did she want to judge whether he was right or wrong.
In her heart, she wasn’t even sure herself.
Vincent tightened his grip on her hand. “Give Harris some time to process it.”
Scarlett murmured an acknowledgment and moved toward the restaurant exit.
Vincent kept pace beside her. Side by side, they stepped through the revolving doors.
Just outside the entrance, Scarlett looked up and saw Damian coming up the steps, a young woman beside him.
Scarlett recognized her-Kylie.
Damian and Kylie noticed Scarlett and Vincent at the same moment.
Vincent looked down the steps. His hand closed more firmly around Scarlett’s, a silent, possessive claim.
Damian’s expression darkened the instant he saw Vincent holding Scarlett’s hand.
Beside him, Kylie moved closer, slipping her arm through his.
Feeling her touch, Damian looked down and detached himself gently but firmly.
A faint, mocking smile touched his lips as he regarded Kylie’s pretty, expectant face. “Better keep your distance. My girl gets jealous easily. She doesn’t like to share.”
He spoke loudly enough for Scarlett and Vincent to hear.
Kylie flushed, clearly embarrassed.
Damian kept his eyes on her, his tone blunt. “You’re my assistant. Remember your place. Or I won’t hesitate to overlook your family’s connections.”
No matter what, Damian’s standing was above the Warrens.
He could extend courtesy if he chose-or withhold it.

Kylie looked up at him, shaken by the ruthless chill in his eyes. She trembled slightly, not daring to say more.
But then Damian smiled again, almost playfully. “What? Scared?”
Kylie shook her head, gathering her courage. “No. I’m not afraid of you.”
And she wasn’t-because she liked him.
Damian didn’t linger on her. His gaze shifted back to Scarlett and Vincent standing at the
restaurant entrance.
His eyes were dark, unreadable pools.
They finally settled on Vincent’s hand wrapped around Scarlett’s.
If looks could maim, Vincent’s hand would have been pierced through.
Kylie followed Damian’s gaze upward, her eyes resting on Scarlett.
In that moment, she felt a tangled mix of envy and resentment.
Scarlett was pleasant-looking, with fine features, but she wasn’t meticulously polished like Kylie.
By any measure, Kylie felt she had the slight edge.
