Scarlett held her, one hand stroking Vanessa’s back, repeating her apology in a broken whisper, “I’m so sorry, baby. Mommy never should have left you. This is all my fault. I should have come sooner… I should have found you earlier. I’m sorry… so, so sorry…”
Her words were thick with remorse.
Hearing them, Vanessa clung even tighter, her small body trembling as she buried her face in her mother’s shoulder. “Don’t cry, Mommy. It was my fault. I didn’t listen.”
During those long, terrifying hours, Vanessa had ached for her mother.
So the moment she was pulled to safety, she let go of their past conflicts, if only for now.
When Scarlett had learned Vanessa was missing, only one thought consumed her-she would give anything, sacrifice everything, to have her daughter back safe.
Now, seeing Vanessa alive and in her arms, the frantic terror in her chest finally began to settle.
Scarlett, not caring about the grime, pressed her cheek to Vanessa’s and said in a trembling voice, “All that matters is you’re safe. You’re safe now…”
As she spoke, tears kept falling.
Vanessa’s little heart squeezed with sympathy. She raised her dirty hands to cup Scarlett’s face, gently wiping the tears from her mother’s cheeks.
The gesture made Scarlett’s heart ache even more deeply.
In that moment, it felt as if her daughter had truly come back to her.
Vanessa kept wiping, her voice soft. “Don’t cry, Mommy. It makes you look sad.”
Scarlett nodded, swallowing a sob. “Okay… I won’t cry. I won’t.”
Damian stood a few steps away, watching the mother and daughter.
His own heart ached for Scarlett.
The rain showed no sign of letting up. Though not a downpour, it was steady enough to soak all three of them thoroughly.
Scarlett, Vanessa, and Damian-each looked completely bedraggled.

After a moment, Scarlett set Vanessa down and crouched in front of her. Taking her arms gently, she began checking her over, her voice still edged with worry. “Let Mommy see… Are you hurt anywhere?”
Vanessa stood still, turning slightly so Scarlett could look.
Aside from scrapes and bruises, there were a few small, angry marks around Vanessa’s ankle that looked like bites.
Scarlett leaned closer to inspect them, but Vanessa suddenly threw her arms around her neck again, sobbing, “Mommy, it was rats. They bit me.”
Hearing that, Scarlett’s heart twisted into a hard knot.
Vanessa was Vincent’s daughter-raised sheltered and cherished. When would she have ever seen a rat, let alone been bitten by one?
The thought sharpened Scarlett’s guilt into something painful.
Just then, Vincent’s car pulled up to the curb.
He stepped out with a large black umbrella. Seeing Scarlett and Vanessa standing exposed in the rain, he hurried over.
Holding the umbrella over both of them, his eyes flicked to Damian, who stood nearby.
Why was he here?
Did Scarlett call him?
Or… did he have something to do with Vanessa’s disappearance?
Vincent’s mind raced through possibilities, but he quickly dismissed the last one. Damian moved in their circles; he wouldn’t target a child.
Which meant Scarlett had likely reached out to him herself.
That realization stung.
Seeing Vincent arrive, Vanessa looked up, her face brightening slightly. “Daddy!”
Vincent pulled his gaze from Damian and looked down at his daughter.
Seeing her filthy, disheveled state, he frowned slightly.

His little girl shouldn’t look like this.

But stronger than his disapproval was a surge of protective worry-he just wasn’t the type to say it out loud.
Vincent tucked the umbrella handle under his chin, bent down, and took Vanessa’s hand. “Vanessa, listen to me. From now on, wherever you go, you tell me or your mother first. Understand?”
Vanessa nodded obediently. “Yes, Daddy.”
Then Vincent turned his attention to Scarlett. Tears were still tracing silent paths down her rain-wet face.
Only now did he fully grasp the depth of Scarlett’s love for their daughter-a love so fierce it seemed to eclipse everything else.
Still holding Vanessa’s hand, he straightened up.
As he shifted the umbrella to shield Scarlett more completely, he said to her, his voice rough, “It’s over now.”
Scarlett looked back at him. The resentment in her eyes hadn’t faded, even with Vanessa found safe.
She didn’t reply, choosing silence instead.
At that moment, Abbott’s car arrived as well.
Seeing Vanessa had been found, Abbott visibly relaxed.
After a brief hesitation, he walked over to Vincent.
“Mr. Stewart,” he said respectfully.
Vanessa was still holding Vincent’s hand. Scarlett stood under the shelter of the umbrella, her gaze drifting past Vincent, instinctively searching for Damian in the dim, rainy light.
