Chapter 454 Lessons From a Rival
Damian stood under a tree, his gaze fixed in their direction.
Just like that, their eyes met across the rainy space between them.

A faint, knowing smile touched Damian’s lips-tinged with a hint of proud satisfaction.
Seeing his expression, Scarlett could guess his thought-he was waiting for some acknowledgment, some thanks for finding Vanessa.
Beside her, Vincent and Abbott were speaking. Scarlett didn’t register their words.
But she sensed, vaguely, that their conversation was winding down.
As she withdrew her gaze, she met Vincent’s eyes looking back at her.
She thought she might feel flustered, but instead, she felt strangely calm.
Vincent guessed she had been watching Damian. His own eyes drifted briefly toward the tree.
Damian stood there, the cold wind stirring the hem of his trench coat.
He seemed like an outsider, and yet-somehow-he had quietly found a place in his wife’s
attention.
In that moment, Vincent felt a prickle of unease he couldn’t name.
Before, Scarlett’s eyes had held only him. Now, it was as if he had faded from her view.
Noticing the rain growing heavier, Abbott spoke up. “Mr. Stewart, perhaps you should take Ms. Stewart and Mrs. Stewart back to Ravenshade Villa first. This weather isn’t good for anyone’s health.”
Vincent nodded. He turned to Scarlett. “Let’s go home.”
At that, Scarlett instinctively stepped out from under his umbrella, back into the rain. The cold drops began soaking through her clothes almost immediately.
She looked at Vincent, her voice low. “You take Vanessa. I’m not going.”
“Where do you plan to go, then?” Vincent asked, puzzled.
Scarlett looked at him, a bitter laugh escaping her. “You lost her, and you didn’t find her. I’m

not like you-I still have a conscience. I wouldn’t just walk away without thanking the person who actually saved her.”
Vincent was silent for a beat. He understood her meaning-she was criticizing him for not acknowledging Damian.
But before he could reply, Vanessa spoke up, her small voice pleading. “Mommy, I want you to stay with me tonight. Please come home with us.”
Scarlett looked down. Vanessa was straining to look up at her, her eyes full of hopeful longing.
In that instant, Scarlett’s resolve softened again.
She hesitated, her gaze, drifting back toward Damian. He was still watching her, that faint smile on his face.
Then, almost imperceptibly, he gave a slight nod.
He hadn’t said a word, but Scarlett understood perfectly.
She had intended to let Vincent take Vanessa home to clean up and rest, while she stayed to properly thank their rescuer.
But with Vanessa’s plea hanging between them, Scarlett felt torn.
In the end, she got into Vincent’s car.
After seeing Scarlett and Vanessa settled in the back, Vincent didn’t take the driver’s seat. Instead, he turned and walked slowly toward Damian.
Inside the car, Vanessa curled close to Scarlett.
With Sabrina not here, her mother was the only comfort she had.
The memory of what had happened still left a shadow of fear in her; she stayed quiet, simply leaning against Scarlett’s side.
Scarlett turned her head, her attention drifting to the two men outside.
As Vincent approached, he showed no sign of aggression. He just stood there in the rain, the umbrella held steady, his dark coat making him almost part of the night itself.
After a long silence, Vincent tilted the umbrella back slightly. His eyes fixed on Damian, but he didn’t speak.

Damian shifted under the stare. “What? Why are you looking at me like that?”
Vincent asked, his voice low and quiet, “How do you do it?”

Damian was taken aback at first. Then, understanding, he laughed softly. “Asking your rival for advice?”
Vincent didn’t appreciate the smugness. His expression cooled. “Forget it.”
He turned to go back to the car.
But Damian called after him, “Vincent.”
Vincent paused, half-turning with a questioning sound. “Hmm?”
Damian’s tone turned uncharacteristically serious. “Love someone with your heart, Vincent. Not with your moods.”
As soon as the words were out, Vincent got into the car without another look back.
And Damian, standing alone in the rain, suddenly realized Vincent might have just been fishing for information.
He shook his head, muttering to himself with a mix of regret and self-reproach, “Way to go, genius. Always running your mouth at the wrong time.”
