Vincent glanced at her, then let out a short, humorless laugh. “Stay here? And do what?”
Sabrina’s implication was obvious, but Vincent pretended not to understand.
She was taken aback. Blushing, she stammered, “Vincent… you know what I mean.”
He chuckled softly. “I don’t.”
Gathering her courage, Sabrina walked over and sat on the edge of the bed. She leaned in close. “If you can be gentle… then tonight, I’m yours.”
Vincent lifted his eyes, studying her with a faint, unreadable smile. After a long moment, he said, “Do you really think I’m the gentle type?”
Sabrina’s heart fluttered. She lowered her gaze, a shy note in her voice. “Even if you’re not… that’s alright too.”
Vincent took a final drag from his cigarette and blew the smoke slowly into the space between them. “Go back and stay with Vanessa,” he said, his tone indifferent.
Sabrina’s heart sank. She couldn’t accept it. “Vincent, I’ve been by your side all this time, and you’ve never once wanted me. I just…”
At that, Vincent raised an eyebrow. “Never wanted you?”
His voice took on a harder, more demanding edge.
Hearing his counter-question, Sabrina regretfully lowered her head again.
There had been a time when Vincent had made his interest clear.
But back then, Maria had advised her that once a man got what he wanted too easily, he stopped valuing it.
So Sabrina had always held that final line.
Maria often said that only when a man invests time and effort will he truly learn to cherish
you.
Sabrina looked up, took Vincent’s hand, and said urgently, “Vincent, I was wrong.”
He stubbed out the cigarette in the bedside ashtray, then gently removed her hand. His tone

was almost tender when he spoke. “Go back to Vanessa. You’re injured. Now isn’t the time.”
Hearing that, Sabrina felt a little better.
Not wanting to push him further, she reluctantly agreed. “Alright, then.”
Vincent nodded. “Goodnight.”
Sabrina returned the farewell before limping out of the room.
Watching her leave, Vincent’s mind filled with thoughts of Scarlett.
He couldn’t explain what was happening to him.
As the mandatory waiting period before the divorce drew closer, he felt increasingly certain that this divorce should not happen.
The thought of his once wholly devoted wife belonging to someone else filled him with a deep, restless discomfort.
Leaning back against the headboard, Vincent lit another cigarette.
His thoughts were a tangle-Scarlett on one side, Sabrina on the other. He couldn’t untangle who he truly loved.
He slept poorly the rest of the night.
The next morning, he rose early.
It was Wednesday, and Vanessa needed to go to preschool.
She’d already missed several days due to her fever.
After reading the morning paper downstairs, Vincent went back up and knocked on Scarlett’s door.
He knocked three times, then waited.
From inside, her tentative voice asked, “Who is it?”
“It’s me,” he replied.
Hearing him, Scarlett frowned slightly. “What is it?”
“Vanessa has school today,” Vincent said. “Let’s take her together.”

After a brief pause, she agreed. “Alright.”

“Get ready when you can,” he added from the hallway. “Lily has breakfast ready.”
“Okay,” Scarlett answered.
Shortly after Vincent returned downstairs, Scarlett followed.

Today she wore a light gray wool coat over fitted jeans, with a white turtleneck sweater underneath. A delicate silver pendant lay against the knit, and her shoes matched the soft hue of her coat.
She had dressed with care. Her freshly washed hair carried a clean, subtle scent of shampoo, leaving a faint trace of fragrance as she passed.
She had applied light makeup-foundation, filled brows, a touch of blush and lip color. It was understated but brought a quiet glow to her features.
As she descended the stairs, Vincent’s eyes were already on her.
He rarely saw her wear makeup. In that moment, something stirred softly inside him.
When she drew near, he stood almost instinctively. “Scarlett.”
Her name escaped him before he could think.
Scarlett paused, meeting his eyes briefly. “Yes?”
Vincent found it hard to look away. “You look… lovely.”
She didn’t hold his gaze. “We should eat. Vanessa will be late.”
“Right,” Vincent said. “Let’s go.”
