Scarlett’s heart ached. She turned on the faucet, rinsed her hands, and walked out of the

bathroom.

At that moment, Sabrina and Vanessa were sitting together on the sofa, quietly talking over the events of the afternoon.

Vanessa seemed to have completely forgotten about her mother.

When Scarlett stepped out, Vanessa’s chatter paused for a second.

Sabrina looked up too, her eyes holding a mix of wariness and watchfulness.

But Scarlett didn’t glance toward either of them. She walked straight out of the bedroom.

The moment she crossed the threshold, the soft sounds of laughter and murmured conversation from inside followed her into the hall.

Scarlett stood outside the door, her back against the wall, struggling to keep her emotions in check.

Just then, Vincent emerged from the room next door.

He stood in his doorway, watching her with concern. “Are you alright?”

Scarlett looked up at him but said nothing.

Seeing her exhaustion, her clothes still marked with traces of grime from Vanessa, Vincent said gently, “You should go clean up.”

Scarlett murmured, “I will.”

As she turned to leave, Vincent added quickly, “You can use the bathroom in my room.”

He stepped aside, making space.

Scarlett offered a faint, weary smile of refusal. “That’s alright. The guest room is fine.”

Back in the guest room, Scarlett stood under the shower for a long time.

With the water streaming over her, she couldn’t tell if she was crying, but a heavy, sorrowful ache filled her chest.

After drying off and blow-drying her hair, she felt parched.

Hesitating only a moment, she decided to go downstairs for water.

To reach the stairs, she had to pass Vincent’s bedroom. As she did, she heard low, indistinct sounds from within.

She didn’t listen closely-she could already imagine what they meant.

A bitter smile touched her lips as she continued downstairs.

Standing in the spacious, silent living room, she drank two full glasses of water before turning back.

Passing Vincent’s door again, she nearly covered her ears.

Those sounds felt intrusive, unwelcome-she didn’t want to hear any of it.

Just ten minutes earlier, after watching Vanessa drift to sleep, Sabrina had slipped quietly out of the room.

She then gently pushed open Vincent’s bedroom door.

Vincent had only just fallen into a light sleep. Hearing the door, he didn’t stir-part of him thought it might be Scarlett coming to him.

The idea made the corner of his mouth curve faintly.

As the presence drew nearer, that unconscious smile deepened.

It wasn’t until he was embraced that Vincent caught a scent that wasn’t Scarlett’s.

He woke with a start, his voice alert. “Who’s there?”

Sabrina held him tighter, pressing her face to the curve of his neck. “Vincent,” she whispered, soft and tender. “It’s me.”

The moment he realized it was Sabrina, Vincent shoved her away abruptly.

Sabrina fell to the floor with a pained gasp. “Vincent, you’re hurting me.”

Vincent sat up against the headboard. He looked down at her on the floor, his tone heavy. “Why aren’t you with Vanessa? What are you doing in here?”

Sabrina sat where she’d fallen, clutching her injured leg, a low groan escaping her lips.

She looked up at him, her voice a blend of hurt, guilt, and a pleading softness. “I knew you were upset with me… I wanted to see you.”

Vincent sat silently on the bed, lit a cigarette, and stopped looking at her. He turned his face. toward the empty darkness of the room, his gaze growing distant.

After taking a drag, he exhaled slowly before saying, his voice rough, “Vanessa is safe. There’s no reason for me to be angry with you now.”

Sabrina remained uneasy. “Vincent… you’re really not upset anymore?”

He took another slow pull from his cigarette. After a long pause, he replied, “Would you prefer if I were?”

The tight string of anxiety in Sabrina’s chest finally loosened. “No,” she said, a note of relief coloring her voice. “I don’t want you to be angry at all.”

Vincent tapped ash into the bedside tray. He narrowed his eyes at her, then said flatly, “If I were truly angry, do you think you’d be sitting there untouched?”

Hearing that, Sabrina brightened. “Vincent, I knew you still cared!”

Vincent didn’t argue. After a beat of silence, he said quietly, “Maybe.”

Seeing the shadowed, troubled look on his face, Sabrina guessed his thoughts were with

Scarlett.

Pushing herself up from the floor with effort, she said, “Vincent… let me stay with you tonight.”
