Claire didn’t say anything, but the tension in her shoulders eased. Scarlett asked, “Now?”

Claire nodded. “Yeah. Now.”

So Scarlett waited while Claire pulled herself together–washed her face, changed her clothes.

Unlike all the other times Claire had dressed carefully to see Elias, this time she kept it simple. No makeup. Nothing special.

When they walked out of the building together, Vincent was leaning against his car, smoking.

He spotted Scarlett and Claire walking out together and looked briefly confused. Then he dropped the half–smoked cigarette onto the pavement.

He crushed it under his shoe and looked up at Scarlett with a smile. “Heading back?”

Scarlett met his gaze.

“Claire and I are going to the police station. You should head home.”

Vincent frowned. “You want me to come pick you up later?”

Scarlett said, “Sure. I’ll call you.”

She flagged down a taxi. Once they were inside, she didn’t look back. She gave the driver the address, and the car pulled away.

Vincent watched the taxi disappear. The smile on his face faded.

He got back into the car and lit another cigarette.

This time, he sat there until he’d smoked the whole thing before starting the engine.

When he got back to Ravenshade Villa, Lily was in the living room.

Vincent glanced at her. “Lily, where’s Vanessa?”

Lily wiped her forehead with her sleeve. “She just went to sleep.”

Vincent said, “Oh.”

He started toward the stairs.

But Lily couldn’t hold it in anymore. “Mr. Stewart.”

Vincent turned, puzzled. “What?”

Lily’s eyes were red. “Please let Mrs. Stewart come back and take care of Vanessa.”

Vincent frowned. “What’s wrong? Isn’t Sabrina taking care of her?”

Lily didn’t hesitate. “No. If this keeps up, Vanessa is going to be ruined.”

At that, Vincent looked at her, his voice flat. “Lily, you’re the help at this house. Did you think about your place before saying something like that?”

Lily flinched, but she held her ground. “Mr. Stewart, I may just be staff, but I’ve come to care about all of you like family. That’s why I’m saying this. Vanessa is a sweet girl. But if Sabrina keeps raising her like this, she’s going to grow up spoiled, entitled, and people aren’t going to like her.”

Vincent listened without changing expression. “That’s enough. I know what I’m doing. I don’t need you to remind me.”

He turned and walked upstairs.

Lily stood alone in the living room, her whole body numb.

Vincent went into his study. Lily’s words echoed in his head.

After smoking several cigarettes, he finally made a decision.

He took out his phone and texted Sabrina. “Don’t come by the house for the next few days.”

The message sent. Sabrina replied immediately. “Okay.”

No follow–up questions. Just that one word.

Vincent stared at the screen, stunned.

Even while he’d been smoking, he’d been trying to figure out how he was going to explain this. to her.

He hadn’t expected her not to ask at all.
