Chapter 483 Caleb’s Visit
Caleb had no reason to doubt him, so he just gave a vague, “Oh.”
He unzipped his backpack and started pulling things out.
“I went back to Nebula this weekend,” he said. “Dad asked me to bring all this for Sabrina.”
On the table he set out a few local things from Nebula–small–batch coffee beans, a jar of wildflower honey, a block of aged cheddar from a nearby farm.

Nothing extravagant, but the kind of thing an old man sends when he’s thinking of someone.
Vincent’s gaze darkened as he looked at the items.
Caleb finished unpacking and glanced at Vincent again. “Dad wants you to bring Sabrina home for Christmas. He said he’d cook something special for
you two.”
Vincent gave a faint smile. “Caleb, I’ll keep that in mind.”
Hearing that, Caleb smiled lightly. “Well, it’s already pretty late, and Sabrina’s not here. I won’t keep you.”
Vincent didn’t insist he stay. He stood to see him out.
Just then, footsteps sounded from the second floor.
Vincent looked up instinctively and saw Scarlett coming down the stairs.
She was only wearing thin pajamas, her hair freshly washed and still damp.
At the sound of footsteps, Caleb looked up too.
When he saw Scarlett, he froze for a second.
Then he turned to Vincent, a trace of confusion in his voice. “Vincent, what’s she… doing here?”
Now that Caleb had asked, Vincent straightened. “Caleb, I forgot to introduce you. This is my wife, Scarlett.”
He said it slowly, deliberately, making sure there was no room for misunderstanding.
Caleb already knew Scarlett was Vincent’s wife. The confirmation didn’t matter much to him. He just gave a slight nod. “Right.”
Then his gaze lingered on Scarlett with quiet curiosity.

Her skin was fair. Even without makeup, she looked fresh and understated.
She wasn’t the most striking woman he’d ever seen, but Caleb found himself wondering what she was like.
Scarlett noticed him staring and ignored it completely.
She’d come down for a glass of water, so she walked straight into the kitchen.
When she came out after drinking, Vincent and Caleb were still in the living room.
Vincent saw her and walked over. “Scarlett, I’m going to walk Caleb out. Go back upstairs.”
She nodded. “Okay.”
She had no intention of waiting up for him, but since he’d already assumed otherwise, she let it
Just then, her phone rang. It was Claire.
Scarlett picked up. Claire’s voice came through low and unsteady. “Scarlett, I need to see you.”
Scarlett didn’t hesitate. “Okay. I’ll be right there.”
She went upstairs, changed, and came back down. Vincent had just stepped back inside after seeing Caleb off.
He noticed she was in different clothes. “You’re going out?”
Scarlett nodded. “Yeah. Claire wants to meet.”
Vincent said, “I’ll drive you.”
After a brief pause, Scarlett gave in. “Okay.”
Half an hour later, the low–slung Maserati pulled up outside Claire’s apartment building.
Scarlett got out. Vincent didn’t seem to be getting out. He rolled down the window and called after her as she walked toward the entrance. “I’ll wait here for you.”
“Yeah,” she said, and kept walking.
She went upstairs and knocked on Claire’s door.
Claire didn’t open it right away. Her voice was cautious. “Who is it?”

Scarlett lowered her voice, knowing she was scared. “Claire, it’s me.”
At the sound of Scarlett’s voice, Claire opened the door.
They hugged the moment it swung open.

Claire was crying, her face tear–streaked and blotchy. Her voice broke. “The police told me Elias
wants to see me.”
Scarlett rubbed her back gently. “Do you want to go?”
Claire paused, then nodded. “Yeah. I still want to go. There are things I need to say to him face- to–face.”
Scarlett knew Claire had let go. If she hadn’t, she wouldn’t have been so determined to press charges.
Without hesitating, Scarlett said, “If you want to go, then let’s go.
I’ll come with you.”
That was all Claire needed to hear.
