Then she took Scarlett’s hand and walked away without looking back.

It wasn’t until they were standing outside the detention center that Claire finally slowed down.

She stopped, and the tears came harder than before.

Scarlett saw her crying and stepped forward, pulling her into a hug.

Claire leaned against her. “Scarlett, when I first met him, he wasn’t like this.”

Scarlett rubbed her back. “That was then. You said it yourself.”

Claire cried for a long time, and Scarlett held her through all of it.

But this time was different.

Before, Claire had always been caught in a push–and–pull–saying one thing, doing another. But now, she was really done with Elias.

When she finally composed herself, Claire straightened up. “Let’s head back.”

Scarlett nodded. “Yeah. I’ll take you home.”

She flagged down a cab, and they got in.

Claire was still sniffling, but she’d stopped crying.

A few minutes later, her phone rang. It was Felix.

The cab was quiet, and Scarlett could hear him on the other end. “Ms. Wright, the evidence is solid. Elias‘ sentence has been determined. Preliminary ruling is three years and eight months.”

Claire was silent for a beat. Then she said, “Okay. I understand. Thank you, Mr. Wilson.”

Felix’s voice was measured. “You should thank Zachary, not me. He’s a friend. I only helped because of him.”

Claire hesitated. “Yeah. I’ll remember that.”

She hung up just as the cab pulled over.

They got out. A long shadow stretching under the streetlight caught their attention.

They both looked up. Zachary was standing not far away.

The early December chill was biting. Zachary had been standing at the corner for a while–his hair was mussed from the wind.

Claire saw him and froze.

Ever since everything happened, Zachary had been around almost constantly, whenever he wasn’t at work.

Claire wasn’t blind. She knew how he felt.

But how could she let someone like Zachary be with someone like her–someone she felt was ruined?

When Zachary spotted Scarlett and Claire getting out of the cab, he walked over.

He nodded politely at Scarlett. “Scarlett.”

She wanted to correct him, but before she could say anything, Zachary turned to Claire. “Where’d you go?”

Claire didn’t lie. “I went to see Elias.”

Zachary’s smile faltered, but his voice stayed quiet. “How’d it go? Did he say anything?”

Claire shook her head. “No.”

Scarlett knew exactly how Zachary felt. But with Claire the way she was now, she didn’t know if he still felt the same.

It was getting late. Scarlett turned to Claire. “Claire, let Mr. Graham walk you up. I’m not coming in.”

Claire clearly didn’t want her to leave, but she also knew Scarlett had her own things to deal with. She nodded. “Okay. Text me when you’re home.”

Scarlett gave a small wave. “Okay. You two go ahead.”

She watched Zachary walk Claire into the building, then turned and started down the street.

She didn’t call Vincent. She didn’t think about hailing a cab to go straight home.

Like Claire, her head was too full.

She just kept walking, not even realizing how many blocks she’d crossed.

At the next intersection, the light turned green, and Scarlett stepped off the curb.

But a strong hand caught her arm.

She turned. Vincent’s face was right there.

Scarlett’s breath caught. Before she could say anything, Vincent spoke first, “You said you’d call. You didn’t. Trying to blow me off again?”

“No. I was about to call.” She held up her phone, as if to prove it.

She seemed distracted, her face blank. Vincent frowned, a thread of concern in his voice. “What’s wrong? You’re in a mood.”

Scarlett shook her head, avoiding his gaze. “I’m fine.”

She didn’t want to tell him. Vincent didn’t press. He just took her hand, matter–of–factly. “There’s something I want to talk to you about.”

He was rarely this serious. Scarlett looked at him. “What is it?”
