Vincent said, “I want you to come back and take care of Vanessa.”

But a moment later, her voice came out flat, emotionless. “After we get divorced, Vanessa’s custody will be yours. So everything related to Vanessa is your responsibility.”

Vincent looked at her. “No room for negotiation?”

Scarlett answered without hesitation. “No.”

Seeing how firm she was, Vincent didn’t push further.

On the drive back, Vincent was behind the wheel and Scarlett leaned against the seat with her eyes closed, pretending to sleep. Neither of them spoke.

When they got back to Ravenshade Villa, Scarlett went straight to the guest room.

Vincent watched her close the door, then walked into the master bedroom.

The thought that Scarlett refused to take care of Vanessa sat heavy on him.

He didn’t sleep well that night.

The next morning, he woke up early.

It wasn’t even seven yet, and he was already downstairs, watching the morning news.

Scarlett didn’t come down until almost eight. Vanessa had already been dropped off at kindergarten by Lily at seven–thirty.

When Scarlett appeared, Vincent glanced at her. “Breakfast?”

She’d changed into a long, fuzzy coat–pale blue, the kind that made her skin look even softer.

She didn’t look at him, but hummed in acknowledgment. “Yeah.”

With that, she walked toward the dining room.

And then, finally, Vincent set down his tablet and followed her.

They ate breakfast in silence. The quiet was broken by Vincent’s phone ringing.

The caller ID said Xavier. Vincent hesitated a moment, then picked up.

Xavier’s voice came through. “Have you eaten?”

“Yeah. Eating now.”

“Alone?”

“No. Scarlett’s here.”

“Scarlett’s there too? Good. I’m calling because Christmas is coming up soon. Bring Vanessa back to celebrate with us. It’s been a while since the whole family’s been together properly.”

At Xavier’s words, Vincent glanced up at Scarlett. Seeing that she didn’t seem to care at all, he replied, “Got it, Grandpa.”

Xavier said, “You two enjoy your meal. Tell Scarlett to come early. It’s been a while since Luke had her cooking.”

Vincent didn’t respond to that. He just said, “I’ll let you go now.”

Xavier answered, “Okay.”

After hanging up, Vincent turned to Scarlett. “You heard what Grandpa said?‘

Scarlett still hadn’t looked up. Her tone was cool. “You and Vanessa go ahead. I might not have time.”

Vincent frowned, irritation creeping into his voice. “You’re always busy. What’s so important?”

Scarlett set down her spoon and looked at him. “I have family too. I need to go back to my own family and spend the holidays with them. Let them eat food I actually cook.”

In five years of marriage, Vincent had only ever thought to bring Scarlett back to Stewart Manor for the holidays. He had never once considered taking her to visit the Therons.

When Scarlett said that, Vincent went still. He didn’t even know how to respond.

Luckily, at that moment, his phone rang again, breaking the silence.

Vincent picked up. This time, it was Vanessa’s kindergarten teacher.

“Hello, is this Vanessa’s father?”

“Yes. This is her dad.”

“Right. Vanessa’s been out for a couple of days, so I forgot to mention it. For the Christmas program, we’re having a holiday performance. All parents are invited to attend with their children.”

Vincent was quiet for a moment. “Okay. I understand.”

The teacher added, “Vanessa’s missed a few dance rehearsals the last two days, so we’ll need to do a little extra catching up. Hope that’s okay.”

Vincent suppressed his irritation. “Yeah.”

With his personality, all he really wanted was for Vanessa to eat well and have fun at school.

Everything else–he didn’t care much about. She was too young to be pushed.

After hanging up, Vincent looked at Scarlett again.

But before he could get a word out, she refused preemptively. “I can’t go. Let Sabrina do it.”

Vincent didn’t have the energy to argue. “Fine.”

So he texted Sabrina, asking her to accompany Vanessa to the kindergarten’s Christmas event.

After the message was sent, Sabrina didn’t reply..

Hours passed. Still nothing from Sabrina.

Vincent had almost forgotten about it–until he saw Sabrina on Twitter at a concert. Then he remembered the message from that morning.

On Twitter, Sabrina and Daniel were at a show together, posting side by side, looking like the couple everyone envied.
