Chapter 494 Christmas Eve Plans

Then Violet’s voice came on. Clara, let Mommy talk to Auntie for a minute, okay?

Clara handed over the phone. Okay.

Violet took it. Scarlett. Are we doing Christmas Eve together?

Scarlett thought about Vincent’s threat. She couldn’t say yes.

So she said, Violet, I’m not sure yet. I’ll let you know after I finish work.

Violet said, Okay. But if you don’t come home, it won’t feel like a full house.”

At that, Scarlett’s nose stung. Her eyes

blurred.

She swallowed the ache in her throat. Violet, you know how it is with us in medicine. Once you’re on shift, holidays don’t really exist.

Violet understood. Yeah, I know. Just come when you can.

Scarlett agreed without hesitation. Okay.

It was trueshe was on call the day before Christmas Eve. And it was also true she couldn’t go back to Theron Manor.

She didn’t have a choice. This was the only way.

Christmas Eve came fast.

Scarlett finished her charts and wrapped up her shift. It was almost one in the afternoon.

She stood up, stretched, and glanced out the window. Vincent’s car was in the hospital lot.

He was standing by it, cigarette in hand.

The sun was out, pale winter light, Vincent stood in it, his whole figure edged in gold,

He must have felt her looking. He looked up.

For a moment, their eyes met across the distance,

He almost smiled. The corners of his mouth turned up.

But Scarlett looked away the next second, like she hadn’t seen him at all.

She organized her notes, washed her hands, and headed downstairs.

When she stepped out of the building into the cold light, Vincent was already walking toward her.

He stopped in front of her. Come on. Let’s go pick up some things.”

Scarlett hesitated, then nodded reluctantly. Okay.

She knew she couldn’t avoid going to Stewart Manor today.

If she didn’t go,

Vincenttrue to his word would take Vanessa to Theron Manor.

She didn’t want her family caught up in all that. So she didn’t have a choice.

Vincent drove. He pulled into the parking lot beneath the biggest mall in the city.

After he parked, they headed straight for the grocery store.

The place was packed. Crowds everywhere.

Scarlett didn’t pick anything out. She just stood to the side, quiet.

When Vincent found something decent, he’d hold it up and ask, What about this?

Scarlett would give a faint smile and nod. Yeah, it’s fine.

No matter what he picked, her answer was the same.

Vincent could tell she was just going through the motions. The enthusiasm drained out of him.

In the end, he grabbed a few bottles of wine and some gift sets and tossed them into the cart.

He was about to head to the register when he noticed a group of young women standing nearby.

They were chatting and laughing, talking about life and relationships.

When Vincent saw them, he stopped.

Scarlett noticed he’d frozen. She followed his

gaze.

And then she recognized them. They were Sabrina’s college roommates.

Vincent hesitated a moment, then pushed the cart toward them.

The women saw him approaching and looked at him warily.

Vincent didn’t waste time. Are you Sabrina’s roommates?

The women exchanged glances, then back at him. Yeah.

Hearing that, Vincent pressed. Weren’t you supposed to have dinner with Sabrina? How come

He cut himself off, but suspicion was already coiling in his chest.

One of the women answered, We were supposed to meet up, but she texted this afternoon and said she couldn’t make it tonight. She said something came up at home.

Vincent frowned. What happened at home?

The woman shrugged. I think someone in her family got sick. She had to go back. She sounded pretty stressed about it.

Vincent nodded slowly. Thanks. I appreciate it.

The women looked like they wanted to ask who he was, but Vincent didn’t give them the chance.

He pushed the cart to the selfcheckout and paid.

Then, without a word, he grabbed the bags and headed for the exit.

Scarlett followed. Step for step. Silent.

Vincent was clearly on edge. She knew he was worried about Sabrina.

On the drive to Stewart Manor, Vincent kept his mouth pressed in a tight line. He didn’t speak. He just drove. Fast.
