Chapter 493 A Knock at Midnight
Even though she’d only been here a few days, she’d made it warm. Cozy.
Seeing this, Vincent couldn’t help but think of before.

Scarlett used to love collecting little things–cheap trinkets, souvenirs from nowhere special. He used to complain about it. Said she was just buying junk.
Now he wondered if he’d been ungrateful.
Scarlett closed the bedroom door and walked over to him. She looked up. “If you came here to tell me to leave, you don’t have to say it. I’ll go on my own.”
She didn’t want to stay at Ravenshade Villa another second anyway.
Hearing that, Vincent looked at her. “You heard what Vanessa said.”
Scarlett’s voice was indifferent. “Does it matter?”
Vincent said, “It matters.”
Scarlett didn’t answer. She just looked at him, silent.
The quiet stretched between them, thick and heavy. Then Vincent spoke, his voice low. “I didn’t come to kick you out. I just wanted you to iron a couple of my shirts.”
Scarlett blinked, surprised. “I’ll get Lily for you.”
She turned to leave.
But as she passed him, Vincent reached out and caught her arm.
Then he pulled, gently, and she was in his arms.
His chest pressed against her back. Warm. Solid,
Scarlett tried to pull away, but couldn’t. Her voice came out sharper than she intended. “Vincent. What are you doing?”
His lips grazed her ear. “We lost one,” he murmured. “Let’s try for another.”
Scarlett gripped his arms, stopping his hands from moving lower.
But she didn’t get angry. Her voice stayed calm. “Vincent. Our separation period is almost over. Don’t get the wrong idea.”

Her tone was flat. Vincent blinked, dazed.
After a long moment, he slowly released her. Stepped back.
He looked at her–so resistant, so closed off–and let out a bitter laugh..
Then he walked out of the guest room without another word.
Before he left, he pulled the door shut hard. The slam echoed.
Back in his own room, Vincent lit a cigarette. Through the haze of smoke, he picked up his phone and messaged Sabrina. “You still want me to go back to Nebula with you?”
He vaguely remembered her saying she wanted to go home for Christmas.
Sabrina replied quickly. “Not going. I have plans for Christmas.“–
Vincent pressed. “Didn’t you say you were going back?”
Sabrina explained, “I talked to Dad. I’ll go another time.”
Vincent stared at the screen. He took a long drag of his cigarette.
He looked at her words, something uneasy coiling in his chest.
Anxiety. Or maybe regret.
The next morning, when Scarlett came downstairs, Vanessa had already been taken to kindergarten by Lily.
Scarlett had timed it that way on purpose. She didn’t want to see Vanessa–didn’t want to feel worse than she already did.
Vincent wasn’t downstairs either. He must have left early.
Scarlett was alone. She had some granola with milk and ate a fried egg.
She was about to wash her dishes when her phone rang.
She glanced at the screen. Violet.
Scarlett sat back down and picked up. “Hey, Violet.”
But it wasn’t Violet’s voice on the other end. It was Clara’s–sweet and bright, “Auntie, it’s me, Clara!”

Hearing that, Scarlett’s face softened into a smile. “Auntie knew it was you. What’s up, sweetheart?”

Clara sounded thrilled. “Auntie, my kindergarten is having a Christmas show. Can you Mommy come with me?”
and
Hearing the invitation, Scarlett almost said yes.
But then she hesitated. “Clara, Auntie has to work the day before Christmas Eve. I won’t be done until the afternoon. Your show will be over by then, so I can’t make it.”
Clara’s voice dropped. “Oh. Okay.”
Scarlett could hear the disappointment. She softened her tone. “But you can have Mommy record a video for you. When Auntie’s free, I’ll watch it, okay?”
Clara brightened. “Okay! Thank you, Auntie. You’re the best. Clara loves you the most!”
Hearing her happy again, Scarlett smiled. “Then Clara has to do a really good job, okay? If you dance well, Auntie will buy you a present.”
Clara giggled. “Okay, okay!”
