Richard’s voice came from behind her, low and threatening. “If you walk out that door, don’t bother coming back. We don’t need a daughter–in–law like you.”
Scarlett let out a quiet, humorless laugh. “Good. That’s exactly what I want.”
She didn’t look back when she said it. But her tone alone carried all the contempt she felt.
She stepped over the shards and kept walking.
Then Xavier spoke, “Scarlett.”
His voice was still gentle. When he said her name, it was almost kind.
But after the miscarriage–after everything–Scarlett no longer had Stewarts.

Xavier had always been good to her. He’d pushed for her and Vincent to be together back then.
But looking back now, wasn’t that also in his own interest?
No matter how kindly he treated her, Vincent would always come first.
Scarlett didn’t blame him for that. She just understood now that this family didn’t have room for anyone else.
Still, she answered, “Yes.”
Hearing her reply, Xavier said quietly, “For my sake. Stay tonight. Spend Christmas Eve with
us.”
Scarlett was silent.
A long pause. Then she turned to face him. Her expression was blank, her eyes hollow. “Grandpa. Let me wish you a Merry Christmas in advance. But you and I aren’t the same blood.
I remember the good you’ve done for me. I won’t forget the bad, either.”
Then she turned and walked out,
Xavier looked like he wanted to say something more, but Richard cut him off. “Dad. Let’s eat. We can play chess after.”
Amanda chimed in. “Exactly. Scarlett’s just ungrateful. You don’t need to waste your breath on her. Let her go. It’s not like we can’t find another woman for Vincent.”

Xavier said nothing. But his face was grim.

Lucy wanted to call out to Scarlett–to ask her to stay. But she held back.
Staying here would only mean more pain.

Outside the estate, Scarlett breathed in the cold night air. The tension in her shoulders released all at once.
She inhaled deeply. It felt like the first clean breath she’d taken all day.
The estate was in a secluded area. The main road was empty—no cars, no people.
She walked along the shoulder, not sure where she was going.
Should she go back to Theron Manor now?
She couldn’t. She didn’t want them to see her like this. Not tonight.
Tonight was a holiday. She wouldn’t ruin it for them.
She spotted a bench by the side of the road and walked over, almost mechanically. Sat down.
She pulled out her phone. Opened her messages.
Violet had sent a flood of photos and videos. Clara dancing. Theron Manor’s Christmas Eve table.
Scarlett stared at them. Her eyes burned. Tears slipped down her cheeks before she could stop them.
She tried to hold it in, but it was useless.”
Aside from Clara’s videos, Lucy had also sent one of Vanessa’s performance.
Vanessa in her little holiday outfit, cheeks brushed with pink glitter, looking sweet and bright.
Her dancing wasn’t polished, but she tried every step.
Scarlett’s chest ached as she watched her daughter on the screen.
She remembered how Vanessa used to be. Before all this. Now she barely recognized her. It hurt more than she could say.
But no matter how much it hurt, there was nothing she could do.
She watched the video several times. Then, quietly, she saved it.

The moment it was saved, she looked up. A car had pulled up to the curb in front of her.
Scarlett frowned. The driver’s door opened.
A woman stepped out. Scarlett froze when she recognized her. “Mrs. Langley?”
Ruth walked over and stood in front of her, studying her face. “You’ve been crying.”
Scarlett wiped at her cheeks quickly.
Ruth handed her a tissue. “Someone upset you?”
Scarlett shook her head. “No.”
Ruth didn’t push, but her voice softened. “If you came from that direction, you just left Stewart Manor. Doesn’t surprise me they’d give you trouble. Vincent’s mother has a reputation.”
