Scarlett blinked. “Then where is he?”

Ruth said, “He’s been busy lately. So he asked me to come get you.”

Scarlett hesitated. “Mrs. Langley, thank you. Really. But it’s late. I don’t want to impose.”

Ruth’s expression sharpened. “Impose? You think I’m not good enough for you?”

The question was pointed. Scarlett shook her head quickly. “No, Mrs. Langley. That’s not what I meant.”

Seeing Scarlett’s discomfort, Ruth softened. She paused, then said, “You saved me on that bridge. Think of tonight as my way of thanking you.”

Scarlett had no argument left. “Okay, then.”

Satisfied, Ruth took her hand again. “Come on. Get in.”

Scarlett walked around to the passenger side and got in.

Ruth drove. Slowly. Barely thirty miles an hour.

The road was straight, well–paved, the speed limit generous. But Ruth kept the needle low.

Ruth wasn’t a new driver. She’d been behind the wheel longer than Scarlett had been alive.

But tonight, something was off.

Scarlett didn’t comment. She turned her head slightly and studied Ruth.

No makeup tonight. Her face was bare, the kind of bare that came from exhaustion, not preference. She’d taken care of her skin, but time didn’t forget.

And it was clear she hadn’t slept well in days. Her under–eyes were shadowed, the whites threaded with red.

Scarlett asked carefully, “Mrs. Langley, have you been sleeping okay?”

Ruth smiled. “A little rough lately.”

Ruth exhaled slowly. “That Damian. He’s thirty years old and still won’t give me a daughter–in- law. Day in, day out. It’s driving me crazy.”

At that, Scarlett’s body tensed almost imperceptibly.

Mothers worried. Even someone of Damian’s standing didn’t lack options. Ruth shouldn’t have had to stress about this.

She hesitated, then picked up. “Hello.”

Nolan’s voice came through–warm, steady. “Scarlett. You want to head downtown for Christmas Eve together?”

Every year on Christmas Eve, the city center came alive. Music. Countdowns. Balloons drifting up into the cold night.

Scarlett thought about it. “Okay. But I have dinner plans first. I’ll call you when I’m done.”

Nolan’s voice lifted. “Sounds good. I’ll wait.”

She hung up and put her phone away.

Scarlett nodded. “Yeah. From college,”

Ruth pressed, “A guy?”

Scarlett didn’t see a reason to hide it. “Yes, Mrs. Langley.”

Ruth seemed intrigued. “Are you two close?”

Scarlett said, “Yeah. Pretty close.”

The car stopped at a red light. Ruth turned to look at her, face serious, “Compared to Damian- who are you closer to?”
