Clara’s eyes were wide and wet. She began to cry-loud, hysterical.

“Mommy! Auntie!”

Violet was terrified, but she forced herself steady. She whispered to Clara, her voice soft and even. “Clara, don’t cry. It’s okay. Listen to Mommy. Don’t cry.”

Clara’s sobs hitched. She quieted, even though her whole body trembled.

Caleb had recovered. He shook off the man holding him and stepped forward until he was inches from Scarlett.

He looked down at her face, then let out a cold laugh. He raised his hand and gripped her chin roughly.

He studied her features. His body tensed.

Then he sneered-and spat on her face.

Scarlett closed her eyes. The spit was cold, wet on her skin.

She wanted to vomit. She swallowed it down.

Clara saw it and broke into fresh tears. “Auntie!” ~

Violet saw it too. Her chest caved. “Scarlett!”

Scarlett stared at Caleb, her gaze flat. “This is all you’ve got. Pathetic.”

Caleb shrugged. “Yeah. I’m pathetic. So what?”

She looked at him, her voice low. “Have you forgotten what Vincent said?”

Just a few nights ago, Vincent had shown Caleb exactly how much Scarlett mattered to him.

It was the only card Scarlett had left.

She wanted Caleb to remember that she was still Vincent’s wife.

But her words only sharpened his contempt. He patted her cheek lightly. “So what if I remember? His heart’s still with my sister. Your dear husband didn’t even spend Christmas Eve with his family. He went to Nebula City to be with her. Who do you think he cares about more?”

His words slid into her chest like a blade.

Scarlett had nothing to say. She stopped using Vincent’s name as a shield.
