Just as he was about to straighten up, Scarlett’s hands suddenly wrapped around his neck. Her eyes were red, glistening. She pulled him closer, her voice thick and slurred, like she was speaking through water. “Damian. Why are you so cruel? Why did you treat me so well before you even knew who I was?”

Vincent stayed bent over her, his face in shadow. Scarlett looked up at him, her features clearly lit by the streetlight.

Hearing her call Damian’s name over and over made something dark curl in his chest. His eyes narrowed.

She was crying. He should have felt something. Instead, he just felt cold. He reached out and grabbed her chin.

His grip was hard, deliberate. She flinched, but he didn’t let go.

Scarlett winced and started hitting his hand. “Damian-let go! You’re hurting me!”

Hearing the name again, Vincent leaned in close. His voice was low, dangerous. “Scarlett. Look at me. Who am I?”

His anger pressed down on her, heavy, suffocating.

Even drunk, Scarlett’s eyes-when she looked at him-were wet with confusion and something that looked like hurt.

Vincent didn’t want to argue with a drunk. He pulled her hands down, shut the car door, and got into the driver’s seat.

On the drive back, Scarlett leaned against the headrest, her head tilted to the side, asleep.

Even in sleep, tears slipped from the corners of her eyes.

Vincent tried not to look at her. At every red light, he did

anyway.

When the car pulled up at Ravenshade Villa, Vincent got out, walked around to the side, and carried her inside.

The moment he stepped through the door, Scarlett stirred in his arms and gagged.

“Ugh=”

She threw up. All over him.

The sharp smell of alcohol and bile hit his face. His jaw tightened.

He strode into the living room and unceremoniously dumped her onto the sofa.

Her head hit the cushion. She winced, her brow furrowing.

Then she gagged again.

Vincent looked at the mess on the floor and called out, voice flat, “Lily.”

Lily hurried in and stopped short at the sight.

In all the time, Scarlett had always been wellbehaved. She drank, but she’d never gotten dead drunk like this. She had never seen Scarlett like this. Scarlett could drink-she had always held her liquor well. To be this drunk, something must have really gotten to her.

Vincent was already pulling off his coat. “Take care of her.”

Lily nodded. “Yes, sir.”

He dropped the soiled coat directly over the mess on the floor. Covered it. His brow relaxed slightly.

He didn’t look at Scarlett again. He walked upstairs.

Lily watched him go, then turned to Scarlett. Her voice was soft, worried. “Mrs. Stewart. Why did you do this to yourself?”

Scarlett wasn’t fully conscious. She let out a small, dizzy laugh, then flopped back onto the sofa.

Lily couldn’t move her, so she brought water, cleaned her up, and draped a blanket over her.

She tidied the living room, and by the time she was done, Scarlett was fast asleep.

Lily didn’t have the heart to wake her. She made herself a bed on the floor beside the sofa.

Around three in the morning, Scarlett woke up, her throat dry.

She opened her eyes and stared at the ceiling. Her mind was blank. She didn’t know where she

was.

After a long moment, she looked around. Recognized the room.

She didn’t remember how she got here.
