Chapter 525 A Lie Revealed
Then Damian asked, “Am I going to die?”
Melinda said, “No. I’ll save you.”
:
He smiled again. “If you save me, you have to take responsibility.”
Melinda was confused. “How… how do I do that?”
He said, “Marry me.”
She didn’t have time to think. “Okay. If you survive, I’ll marry you.”
Those words stayed with him for years.
The ambulance arrived.
Hearing the siren, Damian called out, “What’s your name?”
Melinda didn’t want to answer. She wanted to disappear.
But his fingers were curled into the fabric of her coat, holding on like he wouldn’t let she told him.
Panic flared. She blurted out the first name that came to mind. “I… I’m Scarlett.”

At that moment, Melinda’s head was full of news stories about Good Samaritans getting sued.
So she gave Scarlett’s name.
The memory surfaced, and Melinda finally understood why Damian looked so familiar.
He was the man she had saved.
And judging by the way he treated Scarlett, he had believed her lie.
He thought Scarlett was the one who saved him.
Grace and Catherine were still there. Melinda couldn’t ask what she wanted to ask.
Scarlett seemed down. The others drank with her.
By eleven, everyone at the table except Melinda was a little drunk.
Melinda paid the bill and sent them off one by one.

When she went back to get her, Scarlett was slumped over the table, eyes closed.
Melinda helped her to the restaurant entrance. Just as she was about to push through the door, a voice stopped her. “Ms. Olsen.”
Scarlett swayed against her, mumbling, “Drink up, Grace. Your tolerance is getting worse. You can’t even finish your glass.”
Melinda turned. Vincent was walking toward her.
She knew about Scarlett and Vincent. So she hesitated.
Vincent approached. His eyes swept over Scarlett first, then settled on Melinda. “I’ll take her. I’ll get her home.”
Melinda paused. “Okay.”
Vincent gave a faint smile. “Thank you.”
He stepped forward and took Scarlett from Melinda’s arms.
Scarlett shifted into the new hold and pressed closer.
Vincent caught the smell of alcohol on her. He frowned slightly and asked quietly, “Can you walk?”
At the sound of a voice that wasn’t Melinda’s, Scarlett lifted her head. Her eyes were hazy as she stared at Vincent’s face. “Damian?”
His expression darkened.
He said nothing else. He bent down, lifted her into his arms, and walked out.
Melinda stood there, having heard Scarlett say his name.
For some reason, at that moment, a pang of regret hit her.
If she hadn’t lied that day. If she had given him her real name. Would Damian be treating her like this now?
Maybe they would even be married.
The thought churned in her chest.

Vincent carried Scarlett out of the restaurant. She started crying in his arms. “Damian. Do know you’ve loved the wrong person? You’re such an idiot.
“But why did it have to be me? Why are you so good to me?”
Her arms were looped around his neck. Her words were all for Damian.
Vincent’s face grew darker with every sentence. Finally, he stopped short and looked down at her flushed face. “Look at me. Who am I?”
Scarlett’s eyes widened. She stared at him, laughing and crying. “Damian. You’re Damian.”
Vincent set her down. She swayed, unsteady on her feet.
He grabbed her wrist, hard enough to bruise.
She whimpered. “It hurts. Damian, you’re hurting me.”
Hearing her still call him Damian, he released her. His voice was ice. “If you care about him that much, let him take care of you. I’m done.”
He turned and walked toward his car.
But just as he reached for the door, Scarlett lost her balance and fell to the pavement.
Vincent saw it. His fist slammed against the steering wheel.
He got out, walked back, lifted her into the passenger seat, and buckled her in.
