Shoving a banana into his mouth, he mumbled, "Ms. Theron, I haven't seen you in forever. I missed you so much."

Scarlett watched him stuff his face, cheeks puffed out, eyes crinkling into a smile just for her. It was adorable. She reached out and patted his head. "I missed you too, sweetheart."

Hearing that, Eric hopped off the stool and looked up at her, hopeful. "Then will you come play puzzles with me later?"

Before Scarlett could even figure out how to respond, Nolan's voice cut in from behind. "Scarlett, we still haven't made it to that food market yet."

She turned. Nolan stood there in a bathrobe, wrapped up against the cold.

He never pushed. Never competed. He just showed up, showed her kindness, and hoped she'd notice eventually.

But lately, that didn't feel like enough.

For once, he let himself be a little petty—vying for her attention with a kid, of all people.

Scarlett remembered their plans. She smiled, gently touched Eric's hair, and softened her voice. "Eric, how about I come play puzzles with you after Nolan and I finish walking around the market?"

Eric didn't answer. He looked past her, toward Felix, who'd followed Nolan inside.

Catching Eric's glance, Felix said quietly, "It's fine. You tried."

The words were vague. Scarlett didn't catch their weight.

But Nolan did. He understood exactly what Felix meant. Still, he said nothing. Eric was just a kid.

Scarlett, though, was curious. "Tried? What do you mean?"

Felix walked over calmly. "He tried his best with the puzzles."

That only confused her more. "Were they that hard?"

Felix kept his composure. "Manageable."

Scarlett thought for a moment, then turned back to Eric. "How about later tonight, I bring Nolan along to play puzzles with you?"

Eric's brow furrowed. "Can't you come by yourself?"

She smiled. "Nolan's really good at puzzles too. He'll help you finish them."

Eric dropped his head, pouting. "Fine."
