But his daughter was so young. There was no way she could have that kind of intent.
He turned it over in his mind again and again, but no matter how he looked at it, he couldn't bring himself to believe that Vanessa was capable of something like that.
After a few cigarettes, he forced himself to stop thinking about it. He needed to trust his daughter.
His thoughts drifted to Sabrina. It had been a while since they'd talked—and she hadn't reached out to him either.
So he called her.
It rang a few times before she picked up.
"Vincent." Her voice came through soft, familiar.
Something in his chest settled at the sound. He answered gently, then asked, "How have you been? How's your dad doing?"
"Better," she said. "He's starting to talk again."
Vincent smiled at that. "That's good to hear."
She just murmured a quiet "Mm" and let the silence stretch.
He noticed. "That's all you've got to say?"
There was a pause on her end. "Vincent... I've missed you. A little."
A real smile crossed his face for the first time that night. "I'll come see you in a few days. Things are a mess right now—can't get away."
She didn't ask what kind of mess. "Okay. I'm gonna go now."
Before he could respond, she hung up.
He stood there for a moment, listening to the silence.

At Nebula General Hospital, Sabrina had taken the call in the stairwell.
She'd ended it quickly because she saw Daniel standing at the entrance.
He looked exhausted. His eyes were red-rimmed, his expression unreadable as he watched her.
She slipped her phone into her pocket. "Daniel. What are you doing here?"
