Just as Scarlett was about to speak again, Zachary's voice came through the line with a different question. "Hey, Scarlett. Be honest. You don't have any feelings for Damian at all, do you?"
She paused, then answered flatly. "No. I don't."
Zachary didn't let up. "Then why do you care if he's dead or alive?"
Scarlett thought about it for a moment, searching for an answer that felt true. "He was good to me. He looked out for me. I just want to know he's okay. That's it. Nothing more."
Zachary wasn't satisfied. "That's really it?"
Her voice hardened. "That's really it."
The moment the words left her mouth, the line went dead. He'd hung up on her.
Scarlett stared at her phone, caught off guard. After a few seconds, she typed out a quick message anyway, "Zachary, if you hear anything about Damian, please let me know."

Back at the bar, the night was in full swing.
The door to the private room had been left open, letting the heavy bass from the main floor seep in. But a moment ago, someone had slammed it shut.
Now the room was quiet.
Zachary turned to look at Damian, who'd just walked back from the door looking annoyed. A grin tugged at his mouth. "What's got you so worked up? Scarlett wasn't even done talking and you made me hang up on her. Kinda rude, don't you think?"
Damian dropped onto the couch and shot him a cold look. "Didn't want to hear her voice. It's annoying."
Zachary snorted. "Right. Then who told me to pick up in the first place? And who made me put it on speaker?"
Damian's jaw tightened. "Shut up."
Zachary rolled his eyes. "Look, if she doesn't care about you anymore, why do you care? There are plenty of women out there. Go find one. Hell, find ten. I won't stop you."
Damian's expression twisted. "She called you, didn't she? That means she cares. And don't lump me in with you. I'm not that pathetic."
Zachary spread his hands, still grinning. "See? Man in love can talk himself into anything. Doesn't need me to say a word."
All it took was one comment about her not caring, and Damian was already making excuses for her.
Damian shot him a glare but didn't bother responding. He stood up and headed for the door.
