Since Scarlett was a doctor herself, she already knew the pre-op routine inside and out.
After she finished going through the steps with the nurse, the anxiety started creeping in.
It would've been a lie to say she wasn't scared.
Once the nurse left, Scarlett glanced around the room. Still no sign of Damian.
She reached for her phone on the nightstand. No messages.
She thought about what Damian had said the night before—that he'd be the first person she saw when she woke up. So where was he now?
Right as she was wondering, she heard footsteps outside the door.
She looked up, but it was Violet who walked in.
Violet sat down beside the bed and took Scarlett's hand. "I'm here with you, Scarlett. Don't be scared. You're just going to sleep for a while, and when you wake up, it'll all be over."
Scarlett nodded, but inside, her heart was pounding harder.
As the surgery time got closer, her pulse kept racing.
Nolan stopped by a few times too, each visit meant to reassure her—telling her there was nothing to worry about.
The surgery lasted nearly four hours.
Afterward, she was moved to the recovery room, where she stayed for about an hour before being wheeled out of the surgical unit.
She was barely conscious when they rolled her out. Through heavy-lidded eyes, she caught glimpses of Nolan, Sean, Violet, and a few nurses. But Damian wasn't there.
Her mind was foggy, and soon she drifted off again.
It wasn't until two in the afternoon that she finally woke up fully.
The moment she opened her eyes, a sharp pain shot through her leg. She winced.
Then she heard worried voices beside her. "Scarlett, how are you feeling?"
"Scarlett, is the pain bad? I can ask them to up your meds if you need."
Violet and Nolan. Not Damian.
She looked around anyway. Still just the two of them.
A wave of disappointment hit her, but she managed a smile. "I'm okay. The incision hurts a little, but that's it."
Violet and Nolan both exhaled in relief.
Violet said, "Get some rest, Scarlett. I'm going to step out and call Nathan and your parents—they've been worried sick. I told them not to come, didn't want them making things more chaotic."
Scarlett nodded slightly. "Okay."
