After firing off a few messages to Damian, Scarlett finally managed to calm herself down a little. She told herself he was probably just tied up with something—that's why he hadn't replied yet.
But even as she thought that, a knot of unease stayed lodged in her chest.
What was more, she was starting to realize just how much Damian mattered to her now.
Right as her mind was spinning with all kinds of worries, her phone screen lit up.
She grabbed it without thinking.
But when she saw the message was from Claire, the hope that had surged in her chest slowly deflated.
She opened Claire's messages and found several photos.
When she tapped on them, she realized they were from Amanda's birthday party the night before. Someone had taken pictures of the event, and her eyes immediately landed on Vincent and Sabrina—sitting close together, looking intimate.
But Vincent had explicitly told her he wouldn't be back until Friday.
That thought made her type out a question to Claire before she could stop herself. "These were taken last night?"
It only then hit her—Amanda's birthday had been yesterday.
Claire replied quickly, "Yeah, from last night."
Seeing Claire's confirmation, Scarlett went quiet for a moment.
She remembered yesterday, when Vincent had called and asked her to go check on Vanessa. But he'd already been back in the city—and still, he'd sent her instead.
She couldn't help wondering if the reason Vincent hadn't gone to see his daughter himself was because he'd been busy introducing Sabrina to his family.
Scarlett typed back to Claire, "Okay, got it."
After sending that, she immediately opened her chat with Vincent. "You're back?"
She waited about three minutes before Vincent finally replied. "No."
Her response came faster this time. "?"
Just a single question mark—a clear challenge.
Vincent held his ground. "I'll be back Friday."
Confused, she answered anyway. "Ruth?"
As soon as she spoke, Ruth's anxious voice came through the line. "Scarlett, is Damian with you?"
Hearing that, Scarlett's heart sank even further. "No, he's not here."
Then, unable to hide her worry, she added, "I just texted him—he hasn't answered. Nolan told me he left in a hurry last night, said something came up at home. Ruth, what happened?"
There was a long pause on the other end.
That silence made Scarlett's heart race.
Finally, Ruth spoke, "Something happened to me last night. When Damian found out, he came straight over. But I know my son—once he learned what happened, he wasn't going to let it go. He had someone take me to the hospital, but he never came back himself. I've been sick with worry all night. I haven't heard from him since. So I thought I'd ask you—just in case he went to you."
Scarlett's heart was pounding now. Her own voice sounded distant to her ears. "Ruth, what exactly happened last night?"
Ruth went quiet again. After what felt like an eternity, she spoke. "Last night, I went to the Stewart family's birthday party. After it ended, I took a cab back to the house, but the driver took me somewhere else instead. There were three of them. They said someone paid them to show this old widow a good time. They were about to... They almost... and then Zachary showed up. After Zachary got me out, he called Damian. When Damian got there, he must have gotten information out of those men, because he went after Daniel. Zachary couldn't stop him—couldn't even catch up. It's been over ten hours. I'm... I'm terrified something's happened to him."
Hearing Ruth's words, Scarlett's blood turned to ice and surged with rage all at once.
