Daniel approached with an air of feigned concern. “Have you eaten yet? If not, would you care to join me for a meal?”
Scarlett found his pretense utterly transparent. She let out a derisive snort. “Stop calling me Scarlett. We’re not familiar.”
Daniel raised an eyebrow, his tone dripping with sarcasm. “My, my. Trying to cut ties with us?”
There was a time when Scarlett, desperate to see Vincent, had resorted to flattering Daniel. But now, looking at him only filled her with revulsion.
She fixed him with an icy glare. “Yes.”
She didn’t bother denying it, simply owning the accusation Daniel had thrown at her.
Daniel was momentarily taken aback. Strangely, he felt that Scarlett had changed; she was no longer the persistently annoying presence she once was.
Yet her newfound boldness irritated him and stirred a sense of indignation on Vincent’s behalf.
He sneered, “What’s this? Still pining over that pretty boy, Nolan? Seems you haven’t learned your lesson yet.”
No sooner had the words left his mouth than Daniel pulled out his phone, presumably to make a call. But Scarlett shot him a look so venomous it could kill. “Daniel, that’s enough!” she yelled, her voice sharp. “If you have a problem, take it up with me. Why drag innocent people into this?”
The usually docile kitten was now baring her claws, looking as if she were ready to tear someone apart.
Daniel had never seen this fiery side of Scarlett. He found it somewhat intriguing and couldn’t help a smirk. “Defending your friend so fiercely?”
Scarlett snorted in disdain. “Nolan and I are nothing more than classmates. There’s nothing to ‘defend.”
Daniel pretended not to hear her explanation, his smile lingering. “You’re still Vincent’s wife, after all. I wouldn’t dare cause you any trouble so directly.”
“Daniel, you and your lot are all the same,” Scarlett retorted, her eyes blazing with fury. “You present a polished, respectable facade, but underneath, it’s all just rot.”
She made no attempt to flatter Daniel as she might have in the past.
Daniel stared at her fierce, piercing expression and found himself momentarily stunned. The timid girl who used to always smile nervously in their presence was gone.
He was about to say something more when Sabrina appared seemingly out of nowhere. “Daniel.”
Daniel turned, and his face immediately brightened with a genuine smile. “Sabrina.”
His demeanor around Sabrina was entirely different.
It wasn’t just Daniel-everyone in Vincent’s circle, incluing Harris and the others, treated Sabrina with marked respect.

Scarlett was the sole exception. Though she was Vincents legal wife, they all acted as if she were invisible. With Sabrina, however, they accorded her a status almost on par with Vincent’s own.
The reason wasn’t difficult to discern-Vincent himself only had eyes for Sabrina.
There was a time when this would have deeply upset Scarlett, but now she felt an unexpected, almost ceric, calm.
Sabrina noticed Scarlett. She feigned surprise and asked Daniel, “What’s going on here?”
Daniel shrugged casually. “Nothing of importance, Sabrina.”
Sabrina didn’t press further. Instead, she turned to Scarlett with a saccharine smile. “Ms. Theron, would you like to join us for lunch?”
The sight of Sabrina’s simpering expression turned Scarlett’s stomach. “Drop the act,” she said coldly. “I don’t need your pity, and I have no interest in spending time with any of you.”
Daniel was immediately irked by Scarlett’s tone. “Is that any way to speak to Sabrina?”
Sabrina quickly intervened, placing a restraining hand en Daniel’s arm. “Daniel, it’s quite alright. Vincent will be here shortly. Let’s not cause a scene.”
Hearing this, Daniel finally backed down.
Scarlett found the whole exchange utterly ridiculous. Without another word, she turned on her heel and walked away.
In her haste to leave the restaurant, she missed a step on the staircase and stumbled.
A pair of steadying hands caught her. “Are you alright?” familiar voice asked.
She had likely twisted her ankle; a sharp pain shot through it, making it impossible to stand properly.
As her helper turned her around, Scarlett looked up in surprise-it was Nolan.
Her eyes instantly welled up, a stinging sensation prickling her nose. She lowered her gaze, and tears spilled over onto her cheeks.
“Why are you still here?” she whispered, her voice thick with emotion,
Nolan crouched down beside her, a gentle grin playing on his lips. “What was that about, handing me your bank card all of a sudden?”
Scarlett kept her head bowed, her voice laden with guilt. “To be honest, it’s all my fault that you…”
Nolan didn’t let her finish. “I know,” he interjected softly
Scarlett looked up at him, her expression a mixture of surprise and confusion. “You…?”
Nolan simply smiled, his voice remarkably calm. “I was ever afraid.”
From the moment the director informed him of his termination, Nolan had already pieced together the cause. The only person with the power to blacklist himrom the medical field was Vincent. Given the recent chain of events, the motive wasn’t difficult to deduce.

Nolan gently supported her arm, his tone lightening. “What, are you planning to camp out here on the stairs all night?”
Hearing his teasing remark, Scarlett finally managed to regain her footing with Nolan’s help.
