The weight of the choice pressed down on her, and she ruly had no idea how to answer.

Vincent could see Vanessa’s internal struggle. He gently upped her cheek and said softly, “But it seems like Mom might not need us in her life anymore.”

Vanessa caught the implication immediately and asked harply, “Dad, are you and Mom getting a divorce?”

The question took Vincent by surprise. He hesitated for moment before responding, “No, I would never let you lose your mother.”

Hearing this reassurance, Vanessa finally relaxed. She slipped off the couch and wrapped her arms tightly around Vincent’s neck. “Dad, I want Mom to love me, and I want Sabrina to love me too. And I want you to always love me.”

Vincent’s heart softened completely. He leaned forward gently touching his forehead to hers. “Yes, Dad will always love you. And so will Sabrina.”

Vanessa pressed further, “What about Mom?”

Vincent offered a faint smile and gently tweaked her earlobe. “Dad will make sure Mom never stops loving you.”

Overwhelmed with relief and happiness, Vanessa began spinning around the room, twirling with joyful

abandon.

Watching Vanessa’s unbridled happiness, Vincent felt a quiet resolve solidify within him. No matter what challenges lay ahead, his marriage to Scarlett would continue. For Vanessa’s sake, they would find a way.

Whatever issues existed between him and Scarlett, Vanessa was their shared priority. He simply wanted her to be happy and secure.

The next day, Scarlett finished her morning shift and headed to a nearby restaurant known for its spicy

cuisine.

She had grown accustomed to solitude, often doing things alone.

As she entered, a server greeted her promptly. “Welcom, Miss. Dining alone today?”

Scarlett nodded. “Could I get a table by the window, please?”

Her eyes scanned the window seats, and just then, she saw the hospital director rising from one of them.

There was another person at the table, and even from behind, Scarlett instantly recognized him—it was Nolan.

She had no idea what they had been discussing, but as the director departed, his expression remained grim, devoid of any trace of a smile.

Scarlett didn’t call out to the director. She stayed discreetly out of sight, waiting until he had left before indicating Nolan’s table to the server. “I’ll sit there, pleas”

She walked over and settled into the seat opposite Nolan

He seemed lost in thought, and a sharp pang of guilt shot through Scarlett. She asked softly, “What’s on your mind?”

Nolan snapped out of his reverie and looked up, surprised to see Scarlett seated across from him. A weary smile touched his lips. “What brings you here?”

Seeing him still able to smile at her made Scarlett feel even worse. She lowered her gaze and explained quietly, “I saw you sitting here and thought I’d join you.”

Nolan slid the menu toward her. “Order whatever you’d like. It’s on me.”

Scarlett accepted the menu but made no move to opent. She studied Nolan’s face for a long moment before finally asking, “So, what are your plans now?”

Nolan knew Scarlett was still troubled by the recent events. He shrugged, attempting a casual tone. “No concrete plans. I suppose I’ll treat it as an unexpected vacation.”

Scarlett’s gaze fixed on him, her eyes filled with a complex mix of emotions.

Nolan forced another smile. “Scarlett, really, it’s fine.”

Her heart ached. If it were truly fine, why had he sought another meeting with the director?

She knew Nolan was trying to shield her from worry, bearing the burden alone.

Even now, in the midst of his own troubles, he was still utting her feelings first.

Scarlett’s eyes grew moist as she looked at him, her voice thick with remorse. “I’m so sorry.”

This entire situation had unfolded because of her. She had let Nolan down.

Nolan looked genuinely puzzled and let out a soft laugh “Why are you apologizing to me?”

Scarlett lifted her face, her eyes now visibly red-rimmed. “I bring bad luck. You should keep your distance from me.”

She was certain that if Nolan hadn’t reconnected with her, none of this would have happened.

He had worked tirelessly for years, finally building a stable career, only for Vincent to dismantle it with a few well-placed words.

Scarlett understood the immense effort required to build a medical career, yet against Vincent’s influence, she felt utterly powerless.

Nolan’s brow furrowed, a flicker of frustration crossing is features at her words. But Scarlett didn’t care if he was angry. She placed a bank card on the table between them. “There’s no password. I’m sorry. After 1 walk out that door today, let’s not see each other again.”

She had no idea how far Vincent might go, but she believed it was safer for Nolan if they severed ties.

Leaving the card on the table, Scarlett stood and hurric out of the restaurant, almost breaking into a run.

Nolan sat frozen for a moment, stunned by her abrupt departure. By the time he gathered his wits to chase after her, Scarlett had already vanished.

Scarlett ducked into another restaurant nearby. She was afraid Nolan would follow her, afraid he would refuse to accept the card.

It was the only thing she could think to do.

Just then, a voice laced with surprise called out, “Scarlet”

Scarlett turned and saw Daniel, impeccably dressed in a suit, observing her with a faint, knowing smile.

But the smile in his eyes was sharp and calculating, cutting like a knife.

Scarlett met his gaze, her breath still slightly uneven from her haste, but she remained silent, her expression hardening.
