She hung up and dialed Damian over and over.

Violet had stepped into the bathroom to wash a few things, leaving Scarlett alone in the room. With Damian ignoring her messages and rejecting her calls, the panic clawed its way up her chest.

Her heart pounded. She couldn't sit still. Couldn't breathe.

Before she knew it, tears were sliding down her face.

The door opened.

She whipped her head toward it. "Damian?"

A cold, mocking voice answered instead. "Oh? It's only been a little while, and you're already calling out another man's name?"

Scarlett's face hardened. "Get out."

Amanda's expression curdled. She stepped closer to the bed, her smile sharp as a blade. "Bold of you to raise your voice at me."

Lying flat, still weak from surgery, Scarlett couldn't sit up. She stared at Amanda's face, half-lit by the harsh overhead light. "Why are you really here? You didn't come just to gloat."

Amanda reached into her bag and pulled out a photo, tossing it so it landed on Scarlett's face. "Sneaking around behind Vincent's back, doing God knows what—what are you playing at, Scarlett?"

Scarlett grabbed the photo. Looked at it. Then let out a humorless laugh. "You're asking me what I'm playing at? Why don't you ask Vincent how much better he is than me?"

Her calm jab only darkened Amanda's mood further.

"You can't even keep your own husband interested, and you have the nerve to yell at me? Looks like you've gotten bold—think no one can touch you now?"
