Lily stood outside the study for a moment, then raised her hand and knocked lightly.
From inside, Vincent's low voice came through. "Come in."
She pushed the door open and stepped inside, stopping just past the threshold. Vincent stood by the floor-to-ceiling window, his back to her, staring out into the night.
The silence stretched.
Finally, Lily gathered herself and spoke carefully. "Mr. Stewart, Mrs. Stewart asked me to tell you she's waiting outside. She said she'll stay there until you're ready to reconsider."
Vincent's response came immediately, without hesitation. "Go tell her I've already reconsidered. My decision is final."
Lily hesitated, then ventured, "Mrs. Stewart is a good woman. Why are you doing this to her? Pushing her away like this—you're only going to lose her for good."
Vincent's voice dropped, cold and final. "Get out."
She opened her mouth to say more, but the warning in his tone stopped her.
Pushing further would only make things worse.
So she quietly withdrew, closing the door behind her.
Vincent remained by the window, his eyes fixed on the figure below. Scarlett sat in her wheelchair by the roadside, her gaze stubbornly trained on the villa gates.
The window was cracked open, and the wind sliced through like a blade.
He felt the chill and instinctively pulled back.
But his mind only grew more unsettled.
He turned away from the window and headed for the bathroom.
By the time he'd finished his shower, Scarlett was still there.
Restless, irritable, he killed the lights.
He lay in bed, but sleep wouldn't come. His thoughts churned, a tangled knot he couldn't undo.
Down at the gate, Scarlett looked up at the second floor. She knew exactly which window was his. The light that had been on was now dark.
It was late. Time for rest. But when that light went out, so did the last flicker of hope in her chest.
If she'd clung to a sliver before, now she understood clearly: Vincent really was going to make Nathan pay.
Maybe she never should have hoped at all.
And because she had, the despair that followed cut even deeper.
