Awakened Housewife Ignore Betrayer's Begs (Scarlett) novel Chapter 629

"Then I don't care who you get it from," Caleb shot back, his voice rising. "But you need to find that money. Or are you just going to stand there and watch your brother get destroyed by this?"

Sabrina opened her mouth, but nothing came out. "I—"

Caleb pressed harder. "Listen to me, Sabrina. We're in this together. You and me. If you want any shot at marrying Vincent, you need to help me fix this. Otherwise, what do you think he'll think of you? Look—you cover the money now. Once my guy pays me back, you can quietly return it. He'll never even know."

She had nothing to say. No argument, no comeback.

She left the café soon after.

Outside, the snow was coming down hard, and the wind cut like a blade against her skin.

Tears streamed down Sabrina's face as she walked along the sidewalk, numb, like a ghost drifting through the city.

All these years by Vincent's side, she'd never once asked him for anything. She took what he gave and was grateful for it.

And now Caleb wanted her to ask him for two hundred million? How was she supposed to even bring that up?

She couldn't. She absolutely couldn't ask Vincent for that money.

He was too sharp. The moment she opened her mouth, he'd know something was wrong with Caleb's end of things.

The thought gnawed at her all day.

That afternoon, during her graduate seminar, she couldn't focus at all. Her professor noticed and pulled her aside after class.

In his office, he didn't hold back.

"You're supposed to be working toward a doctorate. With this kind of focus, how do you expect to finish?

"It took you twice as long as your peers just to settle on a dissertation topic. How did someone with this level of discipline even get into the program?

"If you can't get it together, you might as well start drafting your withdrawal letter.

"Go. I've seen enough for today."

Sabrina left the university in a daze and went straight to pick up Vanessa from school.

At the kindergarten gate, she stood motionless, letting the snow and wind batter her.

When Vanessa came out and saw her face, she immediately complained. "Sabrina, you look terrible. If the other kids see me with you like this, they're going to wonder why I'm with someone who looks so... off."

Sabrina's fingers curled into fists at her sides. She swallowed the sharp retort that rose in her throat and forced a smile—one that looked more like a grimace. "I'm sorry, sweetheart. I'll do better next time."

Vanessa relaxed. "That's better. You're the best, Sabrina."

Sabrina took her hand, but resentment coiled in her chest.

On the way back, Sabrina barely said a word. Vanessa, on the other hand, talked endlessly, complaining about this kid and that kid.
