Sabrina sat at the table, her mind elsewhere. She kept poking at her pasta with her fork, barely bringing any of it to her mouth.
Luke noticed she wasn't touching the dishes. He picked up a piece of braised pork with the serving spoon and set it on her plate. "Sabrina, try this. It's really good. Not as good as—"
He stopped himself mid-sentence, suddenly realizing it had been a long time since he'd tasted Scarlett's cooking.
But he could still remember exactly how her food used to taste.
After a pause, he continued, "Anyway, give it a try. Lily's cooking has always been solid."
Sabrina offered him a faint smile. "Thanks."
Watching how attentive he was, she actually started considering the possibility of asking him for help with the money.
After dinner, Luke cleared the plates into the kitchen while Sabrina covered the leftovers with plastic wrap.
Luke hadn't really come to see Vincent anyway. And now that it was getting late, he started to worry Vincent might actually show up.
So he said to Sabrina, "I should probably head out."
Hearing that, Sabrina quickly spoke up. "Luke—wait a second."
He looked at her, curious. "Yeah?"
She hesitated for a long moment before finally saying, "Let's talk outside."
Noticing she was only wearing a thin sweater, Luke grabbed an extra coat from the rack by the door and brought it with him.
The moment they stepped outside, the cold hit them. Snow was still falling.
Luke draped the coat over Sabrina's shoulders. When she looked up, surprised, he smiled gently. "What's up? What did you want to tell me?"
Seeing the warmth in his eyes—something a little more than friendly—Sabrina suddenly found it hard to speak.
"I..." she started, but the words about borrowing money got stuck in her throat.
Noticing her hesitation and the uneasy look on her face, Luke's expression grew concerned. "Sabrina, whatever it is, you can tell me."
Caleb's situation flashed through her mind. She closed her eyes briefly, and when she opened them, it was like she'd made up her mind. "Luke... could you lend me some money?"
He smiled easily. "Sure. How much do you need?"
Sabrina said it plainly, "Two hundred million."
Even Luke's expression flickered at that number.
Seeing his reaction, Sabrina quickly forced a laugh. "I'm kidding. Forget I said anything—"
She started to turn back inside.
