He had loved Sabrina for years—so why had it come to nothing?
He couldn't accept that. He wasn't ready to just walk away.

Meanwhile, after Damian led Scarlett away from Vincent, the two of them didn't head straight back to Theron Manor.
Even with the snow falling, the streets were alive with energy. Crowds moved along the sidewalks, past food trucks and pop-up stalls.
Scarlett had been stuck indoors all day and wasn't ready to go home.
Damian didn't want to go back either—he was happy just spending time with her.
So without saying it aloud, they both lingered instead of turning toward home.
Damian pushed her wheelchair slowly, taking his time.
Whenever they passed a food stand, he'd lean down and ask, "Scarlett, want a pretzel?"
Scarlett shook her head lightly. "No, thanks."
A little farther down, the scent of loaded fries drifted over. "How about some fries?"
"Maybe later," she said softly.
Even after two rejections, Damian didn't give up. When they came across a small bakery, he glanced at her. "Feel like going in?"
Scarlett's eyes landed on the display of cupcakes and desserts, and she felt a sudden craving. Before she could reply, Damian was already steering her toward the door.
For a moment, it struck her—he seemed to read her thoughts.
Maybe that was what a good partner did: notice the small shifts, the unspoken wants.
Inside the bakery, Scarlett's eyes widened at the variety. Every dessert looked tempting, beautifully decorated and impossible to choose from.
She hesitated, scanning the cases.
Damian understood without words. He picked up a tray and a pair of tongs and began selecting one of each kind that caught his eye.
"Damian," Scarlett said quickly, "just two or three is plenty. I can't finish all these."
He kept going, placing another mini-cake on the tray. "If you want to try them, just take a bite of each. If there's too much, I'll finish the rest later. No waste."
Scarlett fell silent, unable to argue with that logic.
In the end, he picked over a dozen different treats. As the cashier packed them into a box, Damian gently tucked a loose strand of hair behind Scarlett's ear.
At the same time, Damian's hand came down, gently pushing Nolan's away. "You can show concern without grabbing at her."
Nolan kept his eyes on Scarlett. "I'm a doctor. I just wanted to check the healing."
He'd noticed her flinch.
Hearing that, Damian straightened but said nothing more.
Scarlett looked at Nolan. Part of her wanted to say she was a doctor too, that she knew the wound was nearly healed—but the words stuck in her throat.
Nolan carefully took her foot anyway. He lowered his gaze, examining the injury on her leg.
But no one saw that beneath his lowered eyes, tears had fallen.
Maybe only the wet pavement, where those tears melted into the snow, knew the depth of the sorrow he carried then.
A quiet blizzard swirled inside Nolan's heart, yet he forced himself to focus, gently checking Scarlett's condition.
When he finished, he kept his head down as he smoothed the leg of her pants.
"It's healing well," he said, voice low. "Just take it easy a little longer. You'll be back on your feet soon."
