Scarlett reached down to adjust her pant leg, but Nolan kept a firm grip on her ankle, refusing to let go.
He only released her once he was finished, and even then, reluctantly.
Still avoiding her gaze, Nolan picked up the fallen umbrella, opened it, and held it over her.
Without looking at her directly, he pressed the handle into her palm. "It's freezing out here with all this snow. Don't catch a chill—and keep that leg covered. If it gets frostbite, it'll only slow down the recovery."
As Scarlett took the umbrella, her eyes briefly met Nolan's.
That was when she noticed—his eyes were red.
It was obvious he'd been crying.
"Nolan..." Scarlett spoke his name softly, unsure what else to say.
Nolan acted unfazed, but inside he was breaking. "Yeah, I'm here."
Scarlett couldn't bring herself to ask him why. Instead, she just said, "We should probably head back now."
Nolan stood up quickly. "Let me walk you."
But as soon as he straightened, Damian was already behind the wheelchair. "No need to trouble yourself, Mr. Huntley. I'll make sure Scarlett gets where she needs to go."
With that, he turned the wheelchair around.
Scarlett glanced back at Nolan. "Thank you, Nolan."
Nolan offered a faint smile but said nothing more.
Even though he was smiling, there was a quiet sorrow in his eyes.
They left, but Nolan remained standing there, lost in thought for what felt like a long time.
Snow had dusted the top of the umbrella he still held.
Then a smooth, coaxing voice came from beside him. "Nolan, are you really okay with this? Just letting them be together like that?"
He turned and saw Melinda.
Meeting her gaze, Nolan replied, "If Scarlett is happy, then I—"
Melinda cut him off before he could finish. "Do you really trust Damian that much? You think he's going to take good care of her?"
Nolan went quiet.
