Thinking about that, she couldn't help but give a bitter laugh.
Back then, Xavier had been fairly polite to her, but now he was showing his true colors.
Him and Vincent—they really were cut from the same cloth.
As she sat there staring at her phone, Nathan walked in through the back door. He was wearing loungewear, and for once he wasn't in a suit. Scarlett found it a little strange to see him like that.
She froze for a second, then said without thinking, "Nathan."
Nathan kicked off his shoes by the door, then stood up and walked over to Scarlett.
As he got closer, he said, "What's the matter? You get fired?"
Scarlett's eyes widened. Surprised, she asked, "How... how do you know?"
Nathan had already reached the door while Scarlett was on the phone earlier. He didn't come in because he wanted to hear who she was talking to.
Even though he hadn't caught what the person on the other end said, he could guess from Scarlett's expression.
After he walked over, Nathan gave a snort and sat down next to Scarlett.
Seeing that she looked like she was about to cry, Nathan held back all the scolding words that had been on the tip of his tongue.
He reached out, pulled Scarlett into his arms, and said gently, "It's no big deal. From now on, I will take care of you, okay?"
His tone was light, like it didn't matter at all.
But Scarlett still felt a little emotional hearing that. She sighed deeply, then said, "But Nathan, I still want to be a doctor. And my grad school test scores should be out soon. I can get into Professor Newman's combined master's and PhD program."
At that, Nathan looked down at Scarlett and let out a small laugh. "Okay," he said. "As long as you're not going back to Vincent, you can do whatever you want. B I will allow it."
Right as they were talking, Scarlett's phone rang again.
Without even thinking, she picked it up to see who it was.
It still wasn't Damian. It was Thomas.
Scarlett saw Nathan looking at her with a questioning expression. She held up her phone and waved it at him. "Nathan, it's Mr. Newman. Talk about perfect timing."
Nathan smiled but didn't say anything. He could see exactly what she was thinking.
Scarlett picked up and said softly, "Mr. Newman."
