Scarlett entered the great room to find Xavier seated at the coffee table, preparing his usual afternoon brew. Dressed in a tailored tweed jacket with a crisp pocket square, he looked every bit the seasoned patriarch—hair silvered, beard neatly trimmed, face lined yet sharp-eyed, his gaze still penetrating enough to make anyone feel transparent.
Leaning on her crutch, Scarlett made her way over and greeted him politely, "Grandpa."
Xavier glanced up, his eyes narrowing slightly as he took in her hobbled posture. After a beat of silence, he poured himself a cup of coffee without offering her a seat.
"First," he said, his voice firm and devoid of warmth, "go fix me a plate of those pastas you used to make. We'll talk about you and Vincent once I've eaten."
His demeanor toward Scarlett had shifted noticeably since learning about the abortion.
Before, he'd been civil, even occasionally gracious. Now, he treated her like an outsider—which, deep down, she knew she'd always been in his eyes.
Hearing his request, Scarlett understood exactly what was happening. This wasn't really about discussing the divorce—it was a reminder of her old role, back when she'd tried so hard to fit into the Stewart family.
She'd learned their preferences inside and out: Grandpa's favorite herbs, Richard's preferred roast, Luke's perfect steak... For those three, at least, she could still plate up a dish that earned their praise.
Standing before the coffee table, Scarlett met Xavier's expectant stare without speaking. The air between them grew thick and tense.
Finally, she broke the silence. "Grandpa," she said evenly, "today isn't a good day for this conversation. Let's pick another time."
She turned to leave.
"Hold on," Xavier cut in, his tone hardening. "Get one thing straight—Vincent listens to me more than anyone. Whether he signs those papers, what you walk away with financially... I can make sure you're taken care of with one word. But if you keep this up, then—"
Scarlett didn't let him finish. A quiet laugh escaped her. "If he really listened to you, he would've treated me better when you told him to. Then maybe we wouldn't be here now."
Xavier caught the edge in her reply. His temper flared. "You're the reason things fell apart, plain and simple. If you hadn't terminated that pregnancy, I would never have allowed a divorce. Even if he didn't accept you, I did. You would've always had a place here."
Scarlett had heard enough. She had no interest in staying for more of his guilt-tripping. "That won't be necessary," she said calmly. "Vincent and I are getting divorced. That's final."
