With her legs still unsteady, she managed only a quick rinse-off in the shower. After stepping out, she settled at the vanity to do her skincare routine, but her thoughts kept drifting far away.
What normally took ten minutes dragged on for over twenty that night.
Her mind kept circling back to Damian.
After wrestling with her worries, she still felt uneasy, so she picked up her phone again and searched for any recent news about him online.
But all she could dig up were the same old stories—gossip columns showing him partying at upscale venues, always with a different woman on his arm. Beyond that, there was hardly anything new.
Seeing those articles still stung a bit.
Just as she was about to lock her phone, a push notification popped up at the top of her screen. "Stewart Group CEO and Genius PhD Candidate—The Perfect Power Couple, Head Over Heels in Love."
Scarlett didn't even feel like tapping it.
A while back, she would've clicked immediately and probably fallen down a rabbit hole of every related piece.
But now, she just slowly set her phone aside.
Once her skincare was done, she grabbed her phone and climbed into bed. She lay there scrolling a while longer, fighting off exhaustion, refusing to let sleep take over.
It wasn't until her phone slipped from her hand and bumped her cheek that she finally admitted defeat and decided to call it a night.
Before shutting her eyes, she checked every messaging app one last time. Still nothing from Damian.
To keep herself from obsessing, she put her phone on silent. Then she tucked it straight into the nightstand drawer—out of sight, out of mind.
That way, whether a call or text came through, she wouldn't know.
With the phone stashed away, she settled under the covers and drifted off.
But in the deep of the night, she jolted awake suddenly.
Her skin was clammy with cold sweat. She patted around blindly, searching for her phone, before fully waking and remembering she'd hidden it in the drawer.
She rolled over, pulled it out, and saw nothing but a few browser alerts. No new texts from Damian. No missed calls.
An unexplained chill ran through her, followed by a heavy wave of disappointment.
She placed the phone screen-down on the mattress. When she lifted her head, tears had already begun rolling quietly down her cheeks.
Worry for Damian crept in—what if something had happened to him?
After turning it over in her mind, she gave in. She picked up the phone and typed out a message, "Hey... did everything get sorted out? Are you okay?"
