There was a smile in Damian's eyes, but every word carried an edge beneath it. He sounded casual, almost playful, yet the bitterness hidden underneath was impossible to miss.

Nolan ignored the comment entirely and simply looked at Scarlett instead.

"It's late," he said quietly. "You should head home and get some rest."

Scarlett's answer came immediately.

"I'm not leaving."

From the couch behind her, Damian called out lazily, "Baby, the guy's basically telling us we're overstaying our welcome. Maybe we should stop bothering him and go home already."

Scarlett turned to look at Damian.

"You should go back."

Damian lifted a brow on purpose, his expression turning teasing again.

"Why are you so determined to send me away?" he asked. "You don't want me here? Or are you worried about me? You hate seeing me suffer?"

Scarlett looked at him seriously.

"You know exactly what I mean, Damian. I'm not joking."

The grin on Damian's face slowly faded.

"And do you know what I mean?"

Scarlett suddenly didn't know how to answer him.

"Damian... why are you doing this?"

But Damian said nothing else. He simply lay back on the narrow couch like he had already made up his mind to stay there for the night.

Seeing him squeezed awkwardly onto that tiny hospital couch, Scarlett's heart softened despite herself.

He was far too tall for something that cramped and uncomfortable, and if he didn't care about her as much as he did, there was no way he would willingly stay there all night.

Scarlett lowered her gaze, her eyes quietly reddening.

Listening to the slow, steady sound of his breathing, Scarlett could clearly sense how tired he really was.

Sometime close to midnight, Nolan finally couldn't stay in bed any longer.

Careful not to wake either Scarlett or Damian, he moved as quietly as possible while getting up and leaving the room.

What he didn't realize was that Scarlett had never actually fallen asleep.
