Awakened Housewife Ignore Betrayer's Begs (Scarlett) novel Chapter 767

Ruth's comment made Scarlett laugh softly, though the smile never fully reached her eyes. There was still a trace of worry sitting underneath it, quiet and heavy.

Ruth could tell exactly what she was thinking. She reached over and gently squeezed Scarlett's hand.

"Scarlett, trust me," she said warmly. "You need to trust him."

Seeing how calm Ruth was about everything made Scarlett hesitate. For the first time, she wondered whether all the fear spiraling inside her had been unnecessary.

After a long silence, she finally nodded faintly.

"Okay."

A binge-worthy romance series played on the TV, the kind Ruth had recently become obsessed with, and every now and then she let out an amused laugh at the screen.

Meanwhile, Scarlett sat at the other end of the couch quietly wiping tears from her face before anyone could notice.

Unfortunately, Ruth noticed immediately.

"Why are you crying?" she asked gently.

Scarlett shook her head and avoided answering.

Ruth knew her too well to push further.

The show kept playing, but Scarlett did not absorb a single scene.

Then suddenly, the sound of the front door opening echoed through the house.

Before Scarlett even had time to react, a low, slightly hoarse voice drifted in from the foyer.

"Mom?"

It was Damian.

Scarlett turned toward the entryway at once and saw him walking in beneath the warm overhead lights.

His wool coat hung open loosely, his tall frame still sharp and broad-shouldered, though there was obvious exhaustion etched into his face now. A rough layer of stubble had grown in along his jaw, adding a worn edge to his usually polished appearance.

Even like this, he still looked unfairly handsome.

Scarlett saw him.

And Damian saw her too.

But their reactions could not have been more different.

The instant Damian noticed Scarlett sitting there, panic flashed through his eyes. He turned away almost immediately, instinctively trying to avoid her seeing him in such a battered state.

Scarlett, on the other hand, stood up before she even realized she was moving.

She stared at him for several seconds, then suddenly ran toward him without another thought.

One of them wanted desperately to hide every trace of weakness.

The other only felt overwhelming relief that he had come back safe.

If Damian had truly wanted to avoid her, it would have been easy. Scarlett's leg was still injured, and she never could have caught him if he simply walked faster.

But the moment he heard her footsteps rushing toward him, he stopped.

He was still worried she would hurt herself trying to catch up.

Scarlett crashed into him from behind, throwing her entire weight against him so hard that the impact almost knocked the breath out of both of them.
