When Scarlett leaned closer to inspect the bite mark, she realized blood had already started soaking through the fabric around it.
Guilt hit her instantly.
"Are you insane?" she scolded softly. "Didn't that hurt?"
Damian laughed quietly, and the exhaustion on his face eased a little beneath the warmth in his expression.
"You're the one who did it," he said. "That makes it worth it. Honestly, even if it hurt worse than this, I'd still let you do it. If you ever wanted to stab me someday, I'd probably hand you the knife myself."
With his handsome face and shameless flirting, he looked exactly like the kind of charming troublemaker nobody should trust.
And yet, somehow, Scarlett always believed him anyway.
There was just something about Damian that made people lower their guard around him.
Still, Scarlett did not answer his teasing. Looking at how pale he seemed beneath the lights, she said quietly instead, "Ruth's been worried sick about you too. Go check on her."
But when she turned toward the living room, she realized Ruth had already disappeared upstairs.
If the TV had not still been playing in the background, Scarlett might have wondered whether Ruth had even been there at all.
She blinked in surprise and looked back toward Damian.
Damian, meanwhile, knew exactly what had happened.
The second Scarlett had thrown herself into his arms, Ruth had quietly stood up from the couch, pointed upstairs at him with a knowing look, and left them alone after he nodded back.
This was clearly no longer her scene.
Scarlett looked around in confusion.
"Where'd Ruth go? She was literally just here."
Damian smiled lazily.
"You're the only one who didn't trust me. She's used to this stuff by now. You think this is the first time somebody's tried setting me up?"
Scarlett looked startled.
"This kind of thing happens to you a lot?"
Damian shrugged carelessly.
"Not really. Usually I'm prepared for it."
The moment he said that, Scarlett immediately thought of Vincent again.
Unease settled back into her chest.
"But Vincent sounded serious this time," she said quietly. "It feels like he's determined to drag you down no matter what. Maybe this situation's over now, but what about next time? He's definitely not done yet. Damian... maybe you should stay away from me."
The second the words left her mouth, Damian pulled her straight back into his arms effortlessly.
Lowering his head toward her, he smiled without hesitation.
"If it's for you, then I'm not scared of any of it."
Scarlett understood exactly what he meant.
But she still could not bring herself to respond directly.
Instead, she turned her face away and murmured, "As long as you're okay, that's enough. I should head home."
Damian immediately tightened his arm around her waist.
"Oh, come on," he teased. "You hug me like that and now you're trying to leave without taking responsibility?"
