Chapter 78 The Broken Promise

Vincent paused for a brief moment before replying, his tone dismissive, “I’m occupied today.
Scarlett refused to drop the matter. “What about tomorrow?”
“Busy.”
“The day after tomorrow?”
“My schedule is already full.”
“What about three days from now?” she pressed, her voice tightening.
Vincent’s tone grew noticeably irritated. “I have no idea.”
Seizing the opening, Scarlett stated firmly, “Alright then. I will come to see you in three days.”
Having declared this, she immediately sat down beside Vanessa, her posture resolute.
Vincent offered no further response. He simply continued upstairs, Sabrina following closely beside him.
Scarlett didn’t turn to watch them ascend, but she could vividly imagine them walking hand-in-hand.
Perhaps after she and Vanessa left for the day, they would be intimate again, having the house to themselves.
But none of that seemed to hold any significance for her anymore.
Vincent had never loved her. If he wished to be with Sabrina, then so be it.
She found she simply didn’t care anymore.
For the next two days, Scarlett did not return to Ravenshade Villa, nor did she prepare breakfast for Vanessa.
Three days later, true to her word, Scarlett arrived at Ravenshade Villa right after her hospital shift.
She settled into a chair in the living room and waited. She waited until well past eight o’clock in the evening, but there was still no sign of Vincent or Vanessa.
Scarlett could no longer maintain her still composure. She turned to Lily, who was quietly tidying nearby. “Lily, is Vincent planning to return home tonight?”
Lily kept her head respectfully bowed, her voice awkward. “I… I truly don’t know, Mrs. Stewart.”
Scarlett didn’t utter another word. Instead, she stood up abruptly, as if a final decision had solidified within her. Without a backward glance, she walked out of Ravenshade Villa.
If Vincent was determined to treat her with such blatant disregard, what was the point of her endless waiting?
From this moment on, she resolved, she would no longer wait for him. He was free to do as he pleased.

Chapter 78 The Broken Promise
** Finished
Outside, Scarlett had just slid into the driver’s seat of her car when the passenger door was abruptly opened from the outside.
Someone climbed into the seat beside her. Startled and lost in her own turbulent thoughts, Scarlett nearly jumped out of her skin.
When her eyes focused and she recognized the intruder, her initial fear subsided, replaced by weary resignation.
Damian settled into the passenger seat. He deliberately leaned in, significantly closing the distance between them.
He studied her face from this intimate angle, and a slow, characteristically charming smirk spread across his lips. “What’s this?” he teased, his voice a low purr. “Am I really that terrifying? You won’t even grant me a glance? Or are you just too shy to look me in the eye?”
Scarlett was in no mood for his banter. “I have matters to attend to, Mr. Langley. Could you please get out of my car?”
Damian remained unfazed. He leaned back comfortably in the seat, lacing his fingers behind his head, and turned his face fully toward her. “What’s this? You return to Rivergate and suddenly you don’t know me anymore?” he prodded, his tone lightly mocking.
A flicker of impatience crossed Scarlett’s features. “Damian, I’m being serious. I really do have something important to do.”
Damian heard the raw, wounded edge in her voice. His playful demeanor evaporated instantly. He sat up straight and, in an unthinking, almost instinctual gesture, reached out his hand. Before he could question the action himself, his fingers were gently brushing through her hair in a comforting pat. “What’s wrong?” he asked, his voice now devoid of its usual mockery.
If one listened closely, there was a thread of genuine concern woven through his words.
Scarlett’s mind was a chaotic whirlwind of disappointment and heartbreak, all stemming from her husband and daughter.
Hearing that unexpected note of concern from Damian now, the dam finally broke. She could no longer hold back the tears that had been threatening all evening.
She tried valiantly to stifle her sobs, but the more she fought for control, the more her emotions overwhelmed her, making it impossible to contain her distress.
Damian was visibly panicked by her tears. “Scarlett, don’t cry, alright? Please. I… I’m not very good at this comforting thing. Just tell me what’s wrong. I’ll fix it for you. Whatever it is. Just please, stop crying.”
Acting on pure impulse, the words tumbled out from Scarlett between her sobs. “I… I just wanted to ask him two simple questions. But he refuses to see me. He’s deliberately avoiding me.”
Damian gripped her shoulders gently, his gaze intent. “You want to see Vincent? Is that it?”
Scarlett’s eyes were red-rimmed as she nodded miserably. “Yes.”
A wide, relieved grin broke out on Damian’s face. “Man, I thought it was something truly serious! If you want to see him, that’s easy. I’ll take you to him right now.”

Damian bargained, “If you promise to stop crying, I’ll take you.”

Scarlett nodded vigorously, wiping her cheeks with the back of her hand. “Okay. I’ve stopped. I won’t cry anymore.”
Damian coaxed her further, a playful glint returning to his eyes. “Then how about a smile for me, huh?”
Scarlett attempted a smile, but the result was a strained, watery expression that looked more pained than joyful.
Damian promptly pulled out his phone and made a call. He received a reply almost instantly.
Once he had confirmed Vincent’s location, Damian got out of the car, circled to Scarlett’s door, opened it, and effortlessly scooped her out of the driver’s seat. He deposited her into the passenger side, efficiently buckled her seatbelt, and declared, “Alright, sweetheart, just so you know, I’m being incredibly magnanimous today personally delivering you to my rival. When you finally come to your senses and become my girl, you’d better properly reward me for this act of charity.”
Scarlett said nothing, her eyes still red but now filled with a stubborn determination.
Damian found her expression oddly endearing.
He chuckled softly to himself, then got back in the car and drove directly to the location he’d been given.
It was an upscale bar, the most exclusive kind in the city, a place frequented only by the wealthy elite.
Damian was evidently a well-known regular. The moment he stepped through the entrance, staff members swarmed around him obsequiously. “Mr. Langley! Which private room would you prefer tonight? Oh, and that sweet girl you inquired about last time, she’s available right now. Shall we have her come up to join you?”
