It was the very first present Scarlett had ever gotten for him.
Damian was overjoyed; it was solid proof she'd kept him in her heart all along.
The car had traveled several miles down the road when Damian spotted a cluster of men cornering a lone woman beside the curb.
Heavy snow still blanketed every corner of Rivergate these days, the bitter cold leaving streets nearly empty of pedestrians and passing cars.
Damian knew if he stayed in the car and did nothing, something terrible would happen to the woman before the night was over.
Without a second thought, he pushed open the car door and stepped out.
Damian slammed the car door shut hard. The loud bang pulled the thugs' attention, and every one of them twisted their heads to stare his way.
Seeing he'd climbed out of an expensive luxury vehicle, the gang showed no trace of fear and jeered provocatively, "Hey man, don't think your fancy ride lets you play hero out here. This isn't your fight. Beat it while you still can."
Damian ignored their taunts. He pulled out a cigarette pack, tapped one tobacco stick free, cupped his lighter against the wind, and lit up.
He took a deep drag, lifted an eyebrow, and shot back at the group, "I'm sticking around. What're you gonna do about it?"
Stubborn, domineering, and unyielding, that was just how Damian always was.
The men scoffed at his reply, "Mind your own business! Get lost before we knock you flat."
Acting like he hadn't heard a word of the threat, Damian kept walking forward instead of backing off.
It was only when he drew near that he recognized the trapped woman—it was none other than Melinda.
She stared up at him in a pitiful state, tears brimming in her eyes, equal parts shocked and relieved to see him.
Damian froze for a split second at the unexpected sight, but he'd already come this far and had no intention of turning tail.
She'd saved his life once before; returning the favor was the least he could do.
He tossed his half-smoked cigarette onto the snow, the glowing butt fizzling out instantly in slush. Hands tucked into his coat pockets, he brushed off the thugs' hostile glares and spoke directly to Melinda, "What's going on? Come over here now."
Melinda strained hard against the two men gripping her arms and snapped sharply, "Let go of me!"
The pair exchanged mocking, disdainful glances at her outburst.
Damian twisted his wrist, casually twisting his fingers, then raised a sharp brow. "You refusing to let her go?"
