Melinda dragged her feet, her tone firm as she spoke to Damian. "You do care about me, and you can't deny it."
Damian let out a short laugh before his features hardened instantly. "I'd pull the same rescue for any random stranger."
Panic flashed across Melinda's face right away. "But I'm not just anyone, Damian. You promised once that you'd marry me."
Damian rested one hand on the steering wheel and glanced sideways at her with a mocking glint. "Did I really?"
Melinda nodded sharply. "You did, I'm certain of it."
A scoff escaped Damian. "Funny, I don't recall a single word of that."
Melinda stared straight into his eyes earnestly. "It's not memory loss. You're choosing to forget on purpose."
Damian's expression turned icy, his voice laced with disdain. "If you already know that, what's the point of going on and on?"
Growing frantic, Melinda reached out to grab his arm, yet Damian dodged her touch effortlessly.
Holding back from trying again, she pressed anxiously. "I'm the one who saved your life once. How can you pretend none of that ever happened?"
Damian lifted an eyebrow in amusement. "Does that favor count for anything?"
Melinda's anxiety spiked further. "Without me, you would've died on that bridge. How could you treat me this cruelly?"
His gaze dropped several degrees colder. "Me treating you cruelly? Let's recap—I just pulled you away from getting abducted by a gang of thugs minutes ago. Even if I'd died back then, I'd never put a ring on your finger."
Every word was frigid and ruthless, not a trace of fondness left for Melinda. His remarks stung like sharp needles piercing straight through her heart.
She stared at him helplessly. "Damian, you..."
Damian cut her off without pause and warned coldly. "Get this straight—the only woman I love is Scarlett, no one else."
Melinda refused to back down. "But you swore you'd marry me; it was me you chose back then."
Damian's patience snapped, and he barked sharply, "Get out of my car. Don't dirty her designated passenger seat."
His face twisted into a menacing glare, completely worn out from their argument.
Frightened by his hostile stare, Melinda froze mid-sentence, lost for words.
A heavy, awkward silence hung thick inside the vehicle.
