Chapter 91 The Center of Attention

The Theron family held considerable social standing. Having accompanied Nathan to numerous events since her teens, Scarlett had been waltzing since adolescence. Yet this marked the first time she had ever danced before such a large audience-and with someone of Damian’s prominence.
With Damian taking the lead, several other gentlemen began inviting the ladies beside them to join the dance floor.
Soon, more and more couples swirled across the marble floor.
And, inevitably, the whispers began anew.
“Isn’t that Damian? Looks like he’s showcasing a new companion tonight.”
“Indeed, his reputation as a serial charmer is well-earned. He never brings the same woman twice. If it’s not his thousandth date, it must be at least his hundredth.”
“True, but this one is particularly striking.”
“Has he ever arrived with anyone who wasn’t? If she weren’t exceptionally beautiful, Damian wouldn’t even glance her way.”
“One must admit, though, they make a visually captivating pair.”
“Look at Damian’s hand-I swear he’s contemplating how to slip it beneath that dress of hers.”
The murmurs drifting from behind eventually reached Vincent’s ears.
For some inexplicable reason, whenever he heard Damian’s name mentioned, an image of Scarlett surfaced in his mind.
He couldn’t suppress the sudden, unwelcome curiosity—was the beautiful woman everyone was gossiping about actually her?
Compelled, he turned to look. In the lounge area not far off, several couples moved to the music. His eyes immediately found Scarlett and Damian.
They moved in perfect synchrony-spinning, dipping, drawing closer in flawless harmony with the piano’s melody, as if they had danced together for years. Their performance was mesmerizing, and both effortlessly commanded attention in the crowd.
For the first time that evening, Vincent truly saw Scarlett. She wore a bold crimson dress, its vibrancy tempered by her delicate features, creating a striking yet elegant presence.
It dawned on him that the Scarlett he recalled-often stained with milk, her hair perpetually disheveled— could also transform into this vision of grace.
Unconsciously, he simply stared, a peculiar constriction forming in his chest. He couldn’t even decipher the strange emotion tightening within him.
A few minutes later, the piano music concluded.

Thunderous applause resonated through the grand hall.

Amid the lingering admiration, Sabrina gracefully lifted her gown and approached Vincent. “Vincent”
Vincent watched as Scarlett and Damian separated, though Damian seemed reluctant to release her, taking her hand to guide her toward the buffet tables.
Sabrina followed Vincent’s gaze and spotted the pair as well.
Her smile faltered momentarily, but with so many eyes upon them, she simply feigned ignorance and gently shook Vincent’s arm. “Vincent, what has captured your attention so completely?”
Vincent snapped back to the present and returned his gaze to Sabrina. “You’ve finished your performance?”
Sabrina nodded. “Yes.”
“Let’s depart, then. It’s time to leave,” Vincent stated.
He began to turn away, but Sabrina quickly caught his arm. “Wait, Vincent, we haven’t taken our commemorative photograph yet.”
Vincent paused, remaining silent for a long moment before finally conceding, “Well.”
By this time, the evening’s festivities were drawing to a formal close.
Scarlett and Damian stood near the buffet, sampling delicacies and sipping wine. Occasionally, business associates would approach to offer toasts in their direction.
A similar scene unfolded around Vincent and Sabrina.
As the night deepened and the banquet neared its official end, the hosts announced the final group photograph.
Only the most distinguished guests were invited for the picture, so Vincent and Damian’s inclusion was a given.
When the participants arranged themselves, Damian and Scarlett were positioned at the center-not solely due to status, but largely because Damian had been the evening’s most significant benefactor.
They stood directly beside Vincent and Sabrina.
Though the central spot was intended for Damian, he insisted Scarlett take his place. Consequently, Vincent found himself standing immediately next to her.
It was the first time all night they had been in such proximity-so close their hands nearly brushed.
Vincent caught the faint, clean scent of her soap-a simple, fresh fragrance that left him inexplicably wanting to lean closer.
But the photographic session concluded all too quickly.
Once the cameras stopped flashing, a mass exodus began.
Scarlett prepared to leave, but Damian intercepted her. “Darling, allow me to drive you home.”

Before Scarlett could respond, Vincent unexpectedly approached. “Lily just called. She said Vanessa has developed a fever and is repeatedly asking for you.”
Scarlett’s expression shifted instantly to one of concern. “Understood. I’ll return immediately.”
She turned to Damian. “Mr. Langley, I must attend to my daughter, so I’ll be leaving now.”
With that, Scarlett gathered her gown and hurried toward the exit.
Damian swiftly caught up to her. “Sweetheart, let me drive you. And I still need to give you that bracelet we discussed.”
Scarlett stopped and met his gaze with firm resolution. “That bracelet is far too valuable. I cannot accept it.”
