The sharp click of high heels on the marble floor made Vanessa quickly turn her head. “Sabrina, you’re back -“she began, but the words died in her throat as she froze mid-sentence.
Standing in the doorway was a woman draped in a blazing crimson gown, so breathtakingly stunning that Vanessa was momentarily robbed of speech.
“Who… who are you?” Vanessa stammered, though something about the woman’s features felt deeply familiar. Yet she couldn’t quite trust what her eyes were telling her.
In her memory, Scarlett had never possessed this kind of radiant beauty.
How could this vision of elegance at the doorway possibly be the same person?
They simply stared at one another, the passage of time seeming to suspend around them.
It wasn’t until Vanessa’s toy slipped from her grasp and clattered against the table that Scarlett finally broke, her voice rough with suppressed emotion as she called out, “Vanessa.”
Only then did Vanessa dare to believe it. The beautiful woman before her was truly her mother. She scrambled to her feet, disbelief painted across her delicate features. “Mom?”
Scarlett’s response was a soft, choked whisper. “Yes.”
Seeing Scarlett transformed into this vision of grace, Vanessa couldn’t contain herself. She rushed forward and wrapped her arms tightly around Scarlett’s legs, gazing up with wide, awestruck eyes. “Mom, did you go to a fancy party with Dad tonight?”
Scarlett instinctively began to reach down to embrace Vanessa, but caught herself halfway. She looked down at Vanessa, a complex mixture of bitterness and sorrow swirling within her. “No,” she answered quietly.
Vanessa’s face clouded with confusion. “Then why are you dressed so beautifully?”
Scarlett opened her mouth to offer an explanation, but the words felt hollow and pointless.
So she simply deflected with a quiet, “No particular reason.”
Though still puzzled, Vanessa didn’t press further. She clung to her mother, an unexpected swell of pride rising in her chest.
It turned out Scarlett could be just as beautiful as Sabrina-perhaps even more so.
Scarlett took a moment to compose herself before crouching down to Vanessa’s level and taking Vanessa’s small, cold hands in her own. “Are you feeling any better now?”
Vanessa looked genuinely surprised. “Huh?”
Scarlett gently smoothed the hair from Vanessa’s forehead. “If you’re not feeling well, you should be resting in bed. What are you doing sitting out here in the living room?”
Vanessa didn’t really want to argue with Scarlett. She certainly couldn’t admit she’d been waiting for Sabrina
to return.

When Vanessa remained silent, Scarlett pressed gently, “Shall I take you upstairs and tuck you in?”

Vanessa was just forming a response when Vincent’s voice cut through from the doorway. “Vanessa, do as your mother says.”
The authority in his tone instantly deflated Vanessa’s resistance. Her shoulders slumped in resignation. “Okay, fine.”
Scarlett could easily guess that Vanessa had likely been waiting for Sabrina in the living room.
But at this point, it hardly seemed to matter who she’d been waiting for.
Taking Vanessa’s hand, Scarlett led her toward the staircase. As they ascended, she asked, “Have you brushed your teeth yet?”
Vanessa shook her head, her voice dropping to a mutter. “Not yet.”
Her tone made her displeasure abundantly clear.
”
Not wanting to indulge her sulking, Scarlett offered, “Would you like me to help you get ready for bed?”
Vanessa gave a small nod. “Yes, please.”
Once they reached Vanessa’s room, Scarlett moved to the closet to retrieve her pajamas.
But the moment she opened the closet door, she fell completely still.
Noticing Scarlett’s sudden silence, Vanessa turned to look. Her eyes fell upon several sets of Sabrina’s pajamas hanging neatly beside her own.
“Mom,” Vanessa explained quickly, “when you’re not here, Sabrina worries I’ll have bad dreams. So sometimes she sleeps in here with me.”
Scarlett stared at the multiple sets of pajamas that clearly belonged to Sabrina. Was it really just “sometimes”?
She didn’t need to think deeply to recognize Vanessa’s deception.
The realization that her own child would lie to protect another woman felt like a thousand needles piercing Scarlett’s heart simultaneously, yet she could only clench her jaw and endure the pain.
Her grip tightened on the closet door handle as she fought to steady her breathing.
Meanwhile, Vanessa approached and stood beside Scarlett, looking up at her with pleading eyes. “Mom, are you staying here tonight?”
Scarlett looked down at Vanessa. Though Vanessa’s expression held complex emotions, Scarlett chose to ignore them, answering simply, “Yes. Since you’re not feeling well, I’ll stay with you tonight.”
Vanessa’s brow furrowed. “Mom, did Dad tell you I was sick?”
Scarlett pulled out Vanessa’s pajamas and replied evenly, “Yes.”

Hearing that Vincent had been the source of the information, Vanessa didn’t dare say anything more.
After a moment’s thought, she suddenly remembered something. “Then, Mom, please wait for me. I’m just going downstairs to get a glass of milk. I’ll be right back.”
It was true that Vanessa had a habit of drinking milk before bed, but traditionally it was Scarlett who brought it to her room.
During Scarlett’s absence from Ravenshade Villa, Lily had been the one to deliver it. There was truly no need for Vanessa to go downstairs herself.
Scarlett could easily guess the real reason Vanessa wanted to go downstairs.
After Vanessa hurried out, Scarlett remained seated on the small sofa, holding Vanessa’s pajamas, lost in a daze for several long minutes.
Still constrained by her elegant evening gown, which made movement difficult, she finally rose and returned to the closet to search for her own pajamas.
