Chapter 115 The Lonely Treehouse

Layla was about to sit down when Shane took her hand and guided her to the seat on the far left, then sat down beside her.

Liam watched the way Shane guarded her like a hawk, said nothing, and after a moment sat down across from him.

Yates sat across from Layla.

Dinner was pure agony for Liam.

And the reason was sitting right there, glaring at him every time he so much as breathed.

Being on the receiving end of a death glare from a highly venomous King Cobra was not, Liam could now say from personal experience, a pleasant memory.

The meal ended in silence.

Liam dropped his fork the moment he finished and bolted.

He couldn’t sit at the same table as Shane, that lovesick fool, any longer.

He didn’t go far. The kiln had just been lit, and someone had to watch it.

Yates stood up to do the dishes. Layla stopped him. “Wait. I need to tell you something.”

Yates sat back down.

“Shane and I have some business tomorrow. We’ll be gone for two days. Take care of yourself while we’re out. Keep the gate closed. If anyone gives you trouble, go find Carson.”

The moment Carson’s name left Layla’s mouth, Shane went completely still.

He’d been wary of George and Liam. But Carson had never crossed his mind. Layla had barely exchanged two words with him. Why would she mention him now? And with such trust?

Yates clearly found it strange too. He didn’t wait for Layla to explain. “Why the Wolf Boss?”

In his mind, Liam might seem unfriendly, but he had a good heart. More importantly, they clearly knew him better.

If Layla had to leave him in someone’s care, Liam was the obvious choice. Not some stranger she barely knew.

“You don’t get it. Carson’s a wolf beastkin. He has that alpha mentality-he looks after everyone in his pack. Even if he doesn’t know you, he won’t let you starve.”

Yates nodded. “Got it.”

Then he thought to ask, “What are you and Prof. Slater going to do?”

Shane squeezed Layla’s hand before she could answer. “We’re going to spend a couple of days alone

together before it gets too cold.”

Yates said, “Well, have fun, you two. I’ll watch the house.”

Layla glanced at Shane, surprised that he’d lied to Yates, but she played along. “We will.”

The heated platform wasn’t dry yet. They couldn’t sleep in the cave.

That night, Shane followed Layla into the treehouse.

A moment later, once he’d settled in, Yates climbed into his own little treehouse.

Liam wasn’t paying attention to Yates. He watched Shane and Layla go into the treehouse one after the other, and his heart gave an involuntary lurch.

In the other tree stood a treehouse-the one Layla had built for Shane. It was clearly more refined than the

others.

She’d built it with care. Then she’d accepted Shane. And the treehouse had never gotten to meet its owner

Lonely.

Just like me.

His gaze flickered, then dropped to the chimney where smoke was curling out. Layla had said he’d have to wait until the residue on the chimney opening dried before sealing the kiln. At least five or six hours. Maybe seven or eight. That was why she needed someone to watch it.

Alone with nothing to do, Liam shifted into his beast form. A sturdy deer, sleek lines, long antlers with multiple points.

[General Hartwell has a gorgeous beast form.]

[One headbutt from those antlers would impale me.]

[Poor General Hartwell, being treated like this by Layla. He’s a general. Who does she think she is?]

[She thinks he’s an adult who chose to come on this show and should take responsibility for his own choices. Can you military fans please stop?]
