Chapter 116 A Herd of Beasts Is Coming

Layla and Shane were still awake, talking quietly. Liam caught faint rustling sounds, but couldn’t make out their whispers.

With his enhanced hearing, if he couldn’t make them out, the Vanguard certainly couldn’t pick up a thing either. The live chat viewers were infuriated, watching the two murmur right in front of the feed.

[This Vanguard is so useless! Who designed it? Can we get an upgrade already?]

[I’m done. I thought they’d shut off the Vanguard to get all lovey-dovey. But it’s still active, and I still can’t hear anything. I don’t know if I underestimated them, or just overestimated the Vanguard

Shane wrapped his arms around Layla’s waist, his tone genuinely hurt. “You sent Yates to find Carson today. That upset me.”

It was just like Shane to come right out and admit he was jealous.

“I just wanted to make sure Yates was safe.”

“Then why not send him to Liam? Liam’s a better fighter than Carson.”

“Liam isn’t as reliable as Carson.”

Shane fell quiet for a moment, seething inwardly at Liam for whatever had given Layla that impression.

An imperial general, in Layla’s eyes, was less reliable than the CEO of an entertainment company.

Yet from his brief interactions with Carson, the man was truly dependable.

It made perfect sense that Layla told Yates to seek Carson’s protection if he was in danger.

But understanding that was one thing; Layla praising another male so highly was another thing entirely.

Layla cut his brooding short. “We’re heading out tomorrow. Which direction should we search?” she asked softly.

She had seen the map Shane had drawn. Almost all of the nearby area had already been searched. This journey would take them much farther out.

“We’ll head south first,” Shane said.

Layla nodded. South was where Shane had found bird droppings before. He had later found plant seeds inside them and spotted that very plant growing in the south.

That did not mean the plant only grew in the south, merely that the chances of finding it there were higher.

“Let’s get some sleep. We need to start early tomorrow…”

Shane’s words died mid-sentence as his entire body went rigid. His eyes widened, and he tilted his head toward the doorway.

“What’s wrong?” Layla watched as his human pupils shifted into vertical reptilian slits, his aura growing tight

Before Shane could answer, Liam’s panicked voice called up from below.

He shouted, “Get up! It sounds like a herd of beasts is coming! A huge number of them!”

Males possessed keener hearing. What Liam could hear from a distance, Shane heard just as clearly.

Layla picked up on the commotion a moment later. By the time she climbed down from the freehouse, she could faintly make out the distant roars of wild beasts.

Yates scrambled down from the treehouse, trembling violently, his fur shaking as he huddled close to Layla. “Layla…”

“Don’t be scared,” Layla said, ruffling his hair. She turned to Shane. “What do we do?”

“It’s probably a beast horde,” Liam said, already shifted back to human form, gesturing frantically from the doorway. “Hurry, we have to run!”

“A beast horde!” At the words, Yates trembled even harder. “Layla, I’m scared.”

[And he calls himself a male? What a coward!]

[What kind of male cowers behind females?]

[A real male stands tall and protects his female. He’s worse than a female. Is he gonna wet himself?]

[What’s wrong with being scared? Who says males have to be tough? Besides, Yates is a pika beastkin! They’re naturally timid!]

[You’re all so brave, always talking about protecting females. You must make a lot of money, right? So your females never have to lift a finger, just wait for servants, huh?]

[Females nowadays are all after money. If you want it so bad, why not sell yourselves?]

The live chat erupted into another argument, but the four people down below, trapped in a life-or-death situation, had no time to pay it any mind.

“How large is the horde?” Layla looked sharply up at Liam.

Liam and Shane exchanged a glance. “Not massive, but there are at least a hundred. This yard won’t hold them off. We have to run.”

A beast horde destroyed everything in its path. Even though the yard looked sturdy, it would not hold up long against the oncoming wave.

It might hold if there were no large, powerful beasts among them. But if there were, the yard might not even survive their first charge.

Wild beasts’ physical strength surpassed beastkins. An average beastkin would struggle against a single wild beast of the same type, let alone a hundred.

Even with Layla and Liam’s combat prowess, against a horde of this size, their only option was to flee.
