Chapter 117 She Was Losing Her Hold
Of the four, Layla could fly, making her the safest of the group.
Shane slithered swiftly across the ground.
Layla held Yates, who had shifted back into a pika, in her talons.
It wasn’t that he was slow. In fact, when running for his life, he was much faster than other pika beastkim.
But his beast form was far too small. A single leap from Liam covered more ground than twenty of Yates’ tiny strides.
It was hardly his fault-his size put him at an inherent natural disadvantage.
Shane tried carrying Yates first, but his snake body was far too slick. Yates slipped off almost instantly.
Next was Liam. Yates clung desperately to Liam’s antlers, yet his tiny paws couldn’t get a solid grip. After just a few bounds, he was shaken loose.
In the end, Layla had no choice but to clutch the small beast in her talons.
As her talons held the pika’s soft body, Yates stayed calm. He’d been through this once before.
“What even causes a beast horde?” Layla asked.
In her past life, she had survived the apocalypse and faced zombie hordes, but she had never encountered a beast horde.
The concept was not entirely unfamiliar, though-she had only ever read about it in novels and seen it in media.
In a world where beasts could shift into humans, a roaming beast horde was hardly the strangest
occurrence.
“There are a few possible causes,” Liam called as he bounded onward. “Scarce resources like water or food can force mass migration. It could also be a mating-season gathering, but those are almost always single- species. This herd is made of countless different creatures, so that’s not it.”
Layla flapped her wings, growing weary. She couldn’t slow down, though. From the air, she had the clearest view of their pursuers.
A rolling cloud of dust trailed the horde, and trees toppled in their wake.
“Don’t normal wild beasts have an instinct to avoid trees?” she asked aloud.
“Usually, yes,” Shane hissed from below. “But panic overrides all instinct. A horde like this crushes everything in its path. Even slower beasts trapped within get trampled. For so many different species to run together like this…. it’s either an apex predator chasing them, a natural disaster, or someone intentionally
drove them out.”
“Someone can do that?” Layla descended slightly. The pika wasn’t heavy, but carrying him in flight for so long required far more strength to keep her balance.

Chapter 117 She Was Losing Her Hold
Her talons were cramping, and she felt Yates’ soft fur slipping in her grasp.
The beast horde was less than 330 feet behind them. A little farther, and they would escape its direct path.
Shane kept slithering forward, glancing upward periodically to check on Layla.
Liam was moving faster, nearly clear of the danger zone already.
A tiger’s roar shook the earth. Moments later, an even louder sky-bound bellow echoed overhead.
The pika in Layla’s grasp, who had remained perfectly still until now, suddenly trembled violently.
Oh no.
That was her first thought. She was losing her hold.
Yates slipped free and plummeted downward.
“Yates!” Layla cried out..
[Ah! Danger!]
[He’ll get trampled or plunge to his death!]
[Oh no! Yates! No! I haven’t even seen you yet!]
[Layla, save him fast!]
