Chapter 122 Near-Drowning Trauma
“I’m gonna die! This thing is way too fast!”
Liam fared better. He was lower, falling at a swifter pace.
Shane, who had clung to and bitten the pterosaur for so long and stayed closest to it, took the full brunt of
its rage.
“George!” Liam barely had time to yell.
Two water jets erupted from the ocean. One caught the plummeting Liam. The other surged up in front of Shane, only to shatter into droplets from the pterosaur’s charge.
The beast kept barreling forward unhindered, straight for Shane.
[It’s over! I can’t watch!]
[Ah! Prof. Slater! I rag on you all the time, but I really don’t want you dead!]
[Prof. Slater, I haven’t even graduated yet! Beast God, protect Prof. Slater!]
[Beast God, protect Prof. Slater!]
[Beast God, protect Prof. Slater!]
The Beast God did not protect Shane.
Shane felt the pterosaur’s massive jaws clamp down on the tip of his taill Sharp pain shot up his tailbone and through his entire body.
“Ah—” A short, sharp cry was cut off instantly. He caught sight of Layla’s eyes watering and immediately clamped his mouth shut.
Layla had been moments from letting go. When she saw Shane’s blood spill across the ocean surface, all rationality left her. She drove her combat knife with every ounce of strength into the base of the pterosaur’s wing.
The full seven inches of the blade sank into the wing joint, leaving only the hilt exposed. She dragged the knife downward, slashing a wound over a foot long and nearly seven inches deep into its flesh.
The agony of moving its injured wing finally forced the pterosaur to jerk its head back and roar. Shane, his tail still trapped in its jaws, went limp and fell.
Shane went completely motionless, and Layla flew into a frenzy, her eyes blazing with fury.
“George!” she shouted.
Another water jet rose from the sea, spiraling upward to cradle Shane gently.
“That was way softer than the one that caught me,” Liam remarked, half-submerged in the water. He had been stunned for a second, then couldn’t help the jab.

Chapter 122 Near-Drowning Trauma
He had slammed hard into his water spout earlier; he would’ve been knocked out if not for his sturdy build His head still felt foggy.
George ignored him. He maneuvered the water carefully, pulling Shane over and passing him to Liam.
Shane’s beast form was far too large, and he was unconscious, unable to shift back.
Even in Liam’s human form, holding the twenty-foot serpent dragged Liam almost completely underwater. He had to stay extremely careful to keep Shane’s wounded tail above the water.
“Get down here!” George shouted up at Layla, who clung tight to the pterosaur’s wing, fighting as if she meant to die alongside it. “Prof. Slater isn’t dead yet!”
Three water jets blasted upward at once toward the beast. But George’s control was limited-he was still young. He couldn’t reach it unless the creature descended lower.
The news that Shane was alive finally snapped Layla out of her frenzy. Shielded by the water jets, she descended quickly.
The pterosaur’s wing was wounded and bleeding heavily, yet it still chased Layla relentlessly.
Still haunted by her near-drowning, Layla was overwhelmed by terror as she neared the water. She shifted into her beast form, halted her fall, and hovered just above the waves.
The pterosaur didn’t hesitate at her sudden stop. If anything, it grew more aggressive. It let out a sharp shriek and dove straight for her.
“Layla! Are you insane?!” George roared. He burst from the water, his silvery merman tail glinting.
Without hesitation, he struck the pink spoonbill hard, sending her plummeting into the ocean moments before the pterosaur’s claws could grab her.
George wasn’t so lucky. The beast’s sharp claws tore a bloody gash straight across his tail.
[Layla! What are you doing?! Trying to get yourself killed?!]
[Layla! If you wanna die, don’t drag George down with you!]
[I can’t believe this. Why is she zoning out right now of all times?!]
[It’s not zoning out, though. She’s a bird beastkin. Falling into water means certain death. She almost drowned before. A little panic response is normal, right?]
[What panic? She’s just being dramatic! Can’t handle her own trauma and drags down the guy saving her!]
[Wait a second… wasn’t Layla’s near-drowning trauma George’s fault in the first place? Isn’t this just karma?]
[Karma my ass! Layla! If anything happens to George, I’ll tear you apart!]
