Chapter 138 Someone Broke Into Our Place
Liam understood Shane’s frustration. Shane was working for the Empire, and when they were in danger, the Empire hadn’t lifted a finger.
They all knew there were traitors high up, so they couldn’t blame their superiors directly. But they were the ones who had almost died. To say they had no hard feelings was impossible.
Even Liam, who had been raised to put the Empire first, couldn’t help but feel a little resentful.
After a moment of silence, Liam stopped trying to talk Shane out of it. Instead, he said, “I want a set tod
Fine. Whatever.
If everyone else gets one, why shouldn’t I? I pulled my weight. We suffered together. We nearly died together.
To his surprise, Shane wasn’t annoyed. He actually looked approving. “Alright.”
“I also want a little kettle,” Liam added.
Layla shot him a look. “Get your own.”
Liam shrank back a little. After witnessing Layla’s ferocity, he was kind of intimidated by her.
Sure, he hadn’t held back against the Quetzalcoatlus either. But Layla was a female.
He was different from the others. He had seen female soldiers on the battlefield.
But those females had gone through professional training. They were trained before they ever set foot on the front lines.
Layla was different. She was just a regular person trying to survive on Planet Frontier.
Females without training often couldn’t even bring themselves to kill a chicken.
But he had seen it clearly. During the fight with the Quetzalcoatlus, Layla had been scared, yes, but more than that, she had been determined to kill.
Especially later, after she figured out why the Quetzalcoatlus was chasing her, every move she made was filled with a cold, hard rage.
It was like she was telling whoever was hiding behind the live feed, playing their dirty games, to bring it on. If she backed down even a step, she wasn’t Layla.
And she had proven it.
Whoever had set that massive Quetzalcoatlus on her must have gone to a lot of trouble. But Layla had
survived.
Remembering her performance, Liam couldn’t help but glance at her a few more times.
They were sitting in the stone shelter. His seat was directly across from Shane, and Layla was sitting beside Shane.

Chapter 138 Someone Broke Into Our Place
Every time Liam looked at Layla, Shane would look up at him.
Liam didn’t know why, but every time he met Shane’s gaze, he felt oddly guilty and quickly looked away.
Then he’d think that looking away made him seem even guiltier, so he’d look back at Layla.
He thought he was being subtle, but every time he looked up, Shane’s eyes were on him, and the guilt would rush back.
It became a cycle, over and over.
Finally, even the usually oblivious Seren noticed. He could never keep his mouth shut. “General Hartwell, what are you and Prof. Slater looking at?”
Liam was already embarrassed about getting caught staring at Layla. Now his silent stand-off with Skane had been called out by Seren. His face flushed. “Nothing,” he muttered as everyone’s eyes turned to him.
“If it’s nothing, then what’s-” Seren started, but Avery elbowed him and shoved a rabbit leg into his mouth.
“Just eat,” Avery said.
Seren shut up. The rabbit leg was too delicious. He loved it. Avery was so good to him, saving the best piece for him.
Dinner ended as dusk settled. Everyone headed home, promising to come back the next day to help rebuild
her home.
Layla found it oddly funny. She thanked them with a laugh and promised to make them all something good
to eat.
But the moment everyone was gone, Yates’ face fell. He looked utterly dejected. “Layla, someone broke into our place.”
“I know,” Layla said, her own expression dark.
Their food supplies were kept in the kitchen. Layla had been cooking in there; of course, she’d noticed things were missing.
A lot of the jerky was gone from the racks. Some of the wild fruit she’d dried and preserved in jars was missing-jars and all.
“Could it have been one of the other guests?” Yates asked.
Layla shook her head. “Hard to say.”
