Chapter 139 They’re Sneaking Kisses

[Not Stella. I can vouch for that. Her Vanguard wasn’t taken.]

Today, to check on Layla and the others, the production team used up all the backup Vanguards, and it still wasn’t enough. They had to take a few Vanguards from the show’s guests to help with the rescue.

The crew had informed everyone that replacement Vanguards wouldn’t arrive until the next day. For now. only one Vanguard was assigned per cabin. They’d all have to manage.

[Then whoever had their Vanguard taken is a suspect.]

[Probably one or two Vanguards were taken from each cabin, right?]

[Talia’s cabin only has one left. Hanna’s cabin had hers taken, but because Wolf Boss and Prince Oliver aren’t in Stella’s cabin, and Stella is the only one there, they didn’t take hers. Emily’s cabin has two left.]

[Wait, that’s not right! I watched Hanna’s live chat today. She had a Vanguard.]

[Right, she did. They took her Vanguard, but then Caleb said he’s not a public figure. He said everyone tunes in to watch Hanna, so he had the Vanguard follow Hanna instead.]

After that comment, the live chat went quiet for a moment. Then, speculation exploded.

[Guys, I think I know what happened.]

[No way! I have to go check!]

[Checking now won’t help. The Vanguard isn’t with him yet. You can only see Hanna, not Caleb.]

[Caleb went to Stella’s cabin. Ugh! He’s the worst! Get away from Stella!]

Layla, Shane, and Yates sat side by side in front of the Vanguard, watching the live chat. They looked at each other.

No one spoke. Finally, Shane took Layla’s hand. “Let’s get some sleep first.”

It wasn’t too late, but everyone was coming to help fix the yard tomorrow. They couldn’t sleep in.

Dinner had used a fair amount of firewood, and the heated sleeping platform was nice and warm.

Shane led Layla into the main room. The Vanguard tried to follow, but Shane shut the door in its face.

The Vanguard bumped into the wooden door, then turned to look at Yates.

Yates could somehow read a “hurt” expression on the device. “Can’t help you.” He shrugged. “You can just follow me if you want.”

[I can actually understand camera language now.]

[Watching Yates is fine. Yates, can you shift back to your beast form?]

[Bro, good taste! When they were escaping today, I thought Yates’ beast form looked so fluffy and huggable.]

Chapter 139 They re Sneaking Kisses

Yates didn’t know what they were thinking. He didn’t have a habit of sleeping in his beast form either. He just stayed in his human form, pulled a hide over himself, lay down on the bed platform, and fell asleep.

[The young ones have it good. They can just lie down and sleep.]

[Yates was really brave today too. If that were me, I’d probably have pissed myself. Yates still found the courage to help, even if it wasn’t much use.]

[Who says it wash’t useful? Everyone said it helped!]

[They were just being nice. You really believe that? Prof. Slater’s venom couldn’t even take that thing down completely. Do you think Yates’ poison really worked?]

[The vibe in their cabin is so good.]

[Wonder what the lovebirds next door are up to? Bet they’re sneaking kisses without us.]

The live chat guessed right.

The moment Shane got through the door, he pinned Layla against the stone wall.

Layla didn’t have time to react. Her head jerked back toward the wall.

But it didn’t hit the stone. It hit Shane’s hand.

He had cushioned the back of her head with his palm. Before she could process that, he kissed her.

“Mmm…” Layla’s eyes flew wide.

She hadn’t expected Shane to kiss her so suddenly. Her body stiffened for a second.

But she came to her senses quickly. She hesitated for a moment between pushing him away and leaning in.

Shane sensed her hesitation and pulled back slightly. His eyes were red-rimmed, yet he had not slipped into his serpent slit pupils.

Any thought Layla had of pushing him away vanished.

She slowly raised her hands, wrapped them around his waist, and pulled him a little closer.

Shane, braced for her to push him, stumbled forward and almost crashed into her.

He quickly lifted a hand to the wall behind Layla to steady himself, stopping the fall.

Before he could recover, Layla hooked her arms around his neck, stood on her toes, and kissed him back.

Shane froze completely. The hand braced against the wall went weak.

Layla was kissing him.

And not just kissing. She bit him, just a little.

A faint sting bloomed on his lower lip. Their lips still pressed together, Layla’s muffled, scolding voice
